Quick coil pack question

Do coil packs just 'go' or can they fail slowly?

The reason I ask is, over the past week I've noticed a slight misfire between 3500-4500rpm, on full throttle but then fine to the redline, today my battery has gave up the ghost so I've charged it to get to work tomorrow and get a new one (I refuse to pay £100 from Halfords, ECP are £45 but closed today) and since putting the battery back on, the car revs freely on, say, 50% throttle but splutters badly on around 75%+ throttle and has the Subaru/3 cylinder sound, I took it for a quick spin and same, it drives fine on part load but floor it and the spluttering continues, I'm also getting a slight popping from the exhaust too:confused: But TBH I can't see why disconnecting the battery would cause this, any ideas?

Coilpacks as in the ones which sit ontop of the spark plugs? if so yes they can go slowly under pressure or just go. if one go's and is weak its likely the other will go off slowly. But coilpacks them self's are £27 incl VAT from the stealers ;)

Yeah I know there pretty cheap, I just hope it is the coil packs and nothing serious, I have the bolt down coils so theres no chance they've just popped out. not bad going though, I expected them to go well before 2 years of ownership and 22,000 miles

So theyr £100 in halfrauds? sure ? the local motor facotrs are always cheaper than the stealers aswell by a few coins. Umm could also be your MAF ? check all 4 coilpacks and do the test! I had mine remapped and had 3 go in one week lol

Alright mate

disconecting the battery and driving off the alternator will cause allsorts of running issues !

The alternator is there to charge the battery only , not run the vehicle basicly your poping and generaly running crap becouse theres not enough voltage for a healthy spark , to fire the injectors, power the fuel pump, run the ecu properly etc etc .

get a new battery first mate and it will feel so much better ,

hope this helps

,sorry if youve just disconnected the battery for a lengh of time its reset the adaptions , so give it a few days and will sort it self .

altho it does sound like a coil pack ,failing under load bud

ok having reread the thread mate , imo first port of call is new battery , if it still does it then look at coil packs bud . you already know the batterys knackerd . and that can cause all the symtoms your describing some case ,my race bike did it lost 14 bhp new battery got it back , alltho my lcd dash going off was the first symtom then popping lack of go under load and finnaly stopped lol

Yeah Sam, its the battery thats £100 from Halfords, I could've done with one today but I'm not paying that as Euro Car Parts are £45 but we're closed as was every other motor factors in my area, also Coil packs are £27 from there as I've just had a look

I'd actually agree with Twenny, get the battery sorted before looking at the coilpacks. If the battery can't provide enough juice to fire the spark, then that would cause the same issue as having a faulty coilpack. Especially under load, as the spark needs to be 100% to burn the richer mixture.

Fix one problem before fixing another that may not be a problem at all.

Batter first then check plug gaps they should be 0.8mm then check coils ;)

Right, update time, changed battery yesterday and the problem was still there (really freindly staff at Euro Car Parts in Newcastle BTW) our grease monkey at work had a look and said it sounded like the spark plugs so I've just changed them and fan-forking-tastic, feels like a different car so all good

It happened to me too once. The car needed a coilpack change, but the mechanic told me to buy sparkplugs first. As I was nowhere near a good car parts shop, I ended up buying some cr@ppy Champion sparks... They never lasted more than 8000 km (4971mi)... That's why we should always replace old ones with good quality NGK's: PFR6Q or 1 level colder iridium BKR7EIX.
