Radio head unit?

Hi I have a Leon 06 with the non MP3 radio version, does anyone know the model/name of this oem unit? It should work fine with Dension ice>Link Plus right? and allow me to control it via the steering wheel controls. I take it all you can do is change track, playlist and volume is this correct?
 
The ice link uses a cd changer control so if your head unit has the inputs for a cd changer ice link will work.

With the steering controls you adjust volume and skip tracks simple enough.. but by pushing button 6 (equivalent to choosing disc 6) it accesses the ipod menu where you can select playlists (using steering controls) or choose to use the ipod controls where a passenger could then choose tracks or adjust settings on the iPod using the thumbwheel.

If you need to know how to remove the head unit.. just shout i can tell you everything you need to know.
 
Hi graeme i would like to know how to get the headunit out also do you know what outputs it had . line out would be handy even if its on and iso plug

So which bits do the ice link plug into? And how do you get to it? Got any pics of how it all comes apart?

Since you ask.. yes I do :D

See in the wiring pic above there is a green and a blue multiplug.. the green is what would be used for telephone and the blue is what the multi changer uses..

The quadlock system is the big black frame which holds the individual multiplugs together as you can see below I had no CD or Tele inputs only the speaker and power terminals. You can also see the clip at the bottom. The CDC/ice>link is the empty slot on the right of this pic.

Once you are in the back of the headunit simply squeeze the clip on the quadlock to remove it from the radio, and plug your ice>link into the CDC slot on the quadlock and refit it to the radio (you can test it works before routing the wires and refitting the radio)

Routing the cable is quite easy.. i found that by taking of the plastic trim on the centre console in the passenger footwell there was a great earthing point and I took the esp blanking switch out and fed the wire up through it.

Also note that the socket which goes into the bottom of the ipod is connected to the ice link with a din/mini din connecter (visible in pic) which can be seperated so if you wanted to drill a hole in the cup holder etc it would only need to be big enough for the din side not the big ipod socket
 
Wow thanks leon1p, thats really useful info there. Just need to know 2 more things.

1) Do you think the ice>link cables are long enough to reach all the way to the arm rest? How long approx. are they?
2) How do you get the radio out? (sorry total noob to car radios here).
 
Leon1p do we all have Blaupunkt head units? Can you give some info of what version of the ice>link you have and the number of pins etc. As Im getting confused as to which to get. :confused:
 
I wish this link had been posted 2 weeks ago. I bought a link cable off ebay to adapt ipod to the CD changer socket and it has a different plug socket on the end! seems like I need the MFD2 plug. bugger

Which version did you buy? Did it say for VW or BMW? Which versions have the MFD2 plug?

I think it possibly could.. i'll pull my cable all the way out and see how far it extends.

Unfortunately I can't be certain which cars have what connector given that you could have sat nav etc. My headunit is the normal CD with MP3 Disc compatibility. Best advice I can give is to take the headunit out and have a look. The pic of the ice link above is my actual one with 12 pins and has part numbers etc visible. To be honest i think as long as it's for a VW and is that 12 pin block it should work.

The first link (the one you bought) has what is known as a mini ISO connector (the blue bit) which is not for the quadlock systems. You are correct the second one you posted is for the quadlock multiplug.

Some blaupunkts do use mini iso.. some use quadlock
 
I've tried getting the unit out to have a butchers but can't get the plastic strips to release the clips. Should there be an audible click when they are in the right place? I think I may go for the Denison icelink but they don't list the Leon on the website. Anyone know the correct part #?
 
Theres no audible click really as you aren't disengaging anything.. as you pull the radio the clips are sprung outwards to stop the radio being pulled forward.. what the plastic does is pushes the clips down slightly and stops them rising..

Make sure the plastic bits go in straight and it should be ok to start pulling on the radio, it will take a bit of "carefully applied pressure" so best to try to use something blunt and use a cloth or something to pad any bits you put pressure on. Once you get it out far enough to get the tips of your fingers to grip it, your just about their.

I have a video of me taking the radio out in almost 1 minute. I'll get it online at some point.

The cable from the ice>Link to iPod is about 140cm so should be able to be routed to the arm rest in such a way that is useable. The ice>link sits in the back of the radio roughly at the bottom right of the glove box so you have 140cm from there to get to the arm rest.

I'm just uploading a heap of pics into an album and i'll upload a link shortly which should give you more help.
