With the auto handbrake on the facelifts it's not actually applying the handbrake, it's just an auto hold function that maintains the brake pressure applied by the foot brake (see owners manual). This is why the light is green on the dash and the brake lights stay on. If you manually use the handbrake the brake lights go off and the handbrake is applied. If parked on a hill, the car sags as it would with a manual handbrake, this is because the brake pressure is released from the front brakes.

As soon as I twigged this was the case, I stopped using the auto hold and I found that the hill hold worked a lot better too. The car always appeared to disengage the brakes as soon as the clutch was lifted slightly With the auto hold. With the actual handbrake applied, hill hold holds the car until the clutch is at the bite point and the car moves away. Haven't touched the auto hold for best part of 8 months now.

Thanks for the explanation of why the brake lights stay on. I must admit the auto hold seems to work well with the DSG box but I don’t like the brake lights on all the time.

I too was wondering if the brake lights stayed on but as I always use the Manual Handbrake instead of Auto, I guess my brake lights go off. I hated the idea of blinding people with my brake lights just as I hate being blinded by them too. Cheers.

Yeah I noticed in reflections when driving at night/ low light and since then I've not used the auto function at all. I've read posts on here before about the hill hold being better on the dsg but I dont rate it on my manual when using the auto hold, no complaints when used manually though.

All the coding is available within the description on youtube

Thanks got it.
At the moment i have inner and outer rear led lights lit when i brake.
The problem is that when i have my sidelights on and i brake nothing really changes as the lights are
already on.
I am trying to find a way to dim the inner and outer rear side lights/daytime running lights so then i brake the lights go brighter.
Hope the above makes sense.

Surely the brake lights are much brighter than the side lights already?

No when i brake the brightness is the same as the side lights, i think i may have upped the brightness with another mod i made.

OK understood, sounds a little dangerous to me, maybe you will have to reduce the intensity back to standard?

No not dangerous at all as they look identical to what it would look like at night without the brake light mod i have done, as the led sidelights are on anyway and the other rear brake lights work as normal

I assume you realise that there are strict rules on the brightness of tail lights and brake lights? Unless I’m mistaken it sounds like your tail lights and brake lights are both as bright as each other?

Is it like mine

Drl's have outer and inner lights on full time.

And with the Brakes on you get all three brake lights plus the DRL's

This setup has been through 2 MOT's with no issues.

but not this - I know there are not street legal still like them though, good for shows.

Nah, don't like that, flashing rear reds are for emergency vehicles. At least with some decent LED indicator bulbs you get the more modern look whilst staying on the right side of the law and not confusing other road users.
