The method I use is -
When fitting the new bearing make sure you pack it well with grease.
Tighten nut so that all play is taken out of wheel and hub,
Then slacken by 1/4 of a turn,
Fit all the hub & wheel parts back together again,
With the corner of the car still resting on the jack, grab top & bottom of the wheel with your hands and it should rock back and forth very slightly, you should hear the hub gently knocking on the bearing. If the amount of play is more than 1mm. it's too loose.
If you can't rotate the wheel then it too tight.
