This is long one guys so bear with me.....

Around 11 months ago I bent a conrod, which resulted in essentially a full engine rebuild. The bent rod had touched the inside of the bore so the block was bored out slightly to 81.5mm, new JE pistons were installed along with a set of IE rods, stock compression was miantained.

The head was also stripped and inspected and this resulted in new lifters, VVT tensioner, valve guides and valve stem seals. Whilst the engine was out the turbo was inspected and there were 3 massive cracks found on the exhaust side. So a new turbo was fitted. Again this was a stock item so no hybrid, the bill was already massive

After this everything was put back together using new gasket and bolts etc. The engine was run in for a thousand miles, an oil change carried out and the stage 2 software re-enabled. After a month or so I noticed there was a plume of smoke out of the exhaust on warm starts, I put this down to some condensation build up in the exhaust and due the lack of a cat this was being blown out. I then noticed that there was the occasional puff of smoke when accelerating after a period of crusing. This then developed into smoke being blown out on overrun i.e. coasting & slowing whilst still in gear, this however was rare. The garage that carried out the work had the car in and saw the smoke and similar syptoms. The enigine builder also looked at the car and they agreed that something wasnt right. The engine builder then asked to look at the car a couple of weeks later and the smoking had stopped. All the previously seen smoke was non existent even the most common, which was on a warm start. It was then explained that everything replaced was mechanical and if it was broken it would be smoking consistently, the removal of the PCV system was questioned (a catch can is fitted keeping the "Hockey Puk" valve) A new valve was fitted and the smoke never returned, until yesterday that was. Everytime I went anywhere near the accelerator there was a puff of smoke out the exhaust. I have driven the car today and there is no smoke once again!!

So can anyone shed any light on the situation and what maybe causing the sporadic smoking? Both myself and the garage are bemused. The car pulls like never before, there are virtually no CFs, I would expect to see massive correction if oil was entering the combustion chamber. When there is smoke there is oil consumption which seems to be around 1 litre per 500 miles.

Thanks,
Matt.

I have the same problem, sometimes after a slow drive it smokes quite a lot but after a good drive i can leave it on tickover for 10 minutes no smoke at all so i think that rules out turbo seals. Can any one help?

Mine only ever seems to smoke when the throttle is pressed. The odd thing is that it can go days sometimes weeks without a hint of smoke then it'll have a day where its smokes like hell.

Its book in on Friday where hopefully their going to do a leak down test, compression test etc. Will keep the thread updated.

Thanks for the input gents.

Matt.

Just to keep this updated, leak down test and compression test passed. They also looked inside the bores using some form of endoscope and all looks fine & normal. They have asked me to refit the PCV system. Trouble is I don't have all of it left, anyone got a PCV system including the brake booster stuff lying around? Get in touch if you have.

Cheers,
Matt.
