Recommend me a good machine polisher!

Well, had an initial play around before.

Kind of went in at the deep and and attempted to tackle a panel with RDS' ranging from swirls to a few deep scratches. (Door on a deep blue Passat)

After working for around 15 minutes with Megs #83, the swirls had gone and the lighter scratches almost invisible to the eye.

Iv decided I need something a little more abrasive, so some sound advice there n_d_fox - you were right!

Going to try out Megs #105 along with a Sonus SFX-1 pad. - Should hopefully allow me to work on the medium scratches.

Rather than start a new thread, i'll just add to this. I'm also looking at a DA polisher, but i'm a bit confused on the applying polish bit. Do you use the DA polisher to apply the polish, take it off, or both? Is it easier to do some by machine and some by hand?

I apply the polish with the DA polisher until its gone to a haze, then remove with a microfibre.

Im still confused on what a "newbie" would need to buy.

For instance i know that id need the polisher and a few pads and compounds... but would you just get a medium and light cutting compounds and a various selection of pads?

A good place to start from would be to get a package deal, like I did.

As listed in a previous post, as part of the package, I got 3 polishing pads (Cutting, Polishing & Finishing) a bottle of Meguiars #83 and #80.

Try it out with what you get, then try other products & pads as you go along & gain more experience.

for the "average" car that should be ok shouldnt it? and if the correction level needs to be higher than i can get a stronger cut right?

Yeah, light swirls and some very light scratches can be worked out with a medium cut.
Heavier swirls & light scratches can be worked with a heavy cut.

thats what i thought would be the case.

I just attacked my old bmw with a medium cut and it came out ok

got an RAC cheapy one to have a bash at the bonnet first
