:(!!! release bearings gone

on the weekend of all weekends, my 2001/51 ibiza goes down the swonny on the way home from work..

RAC comes out and says the release bearings have gone, or the swing arm has gone for the clutch.. what a joke?

anyhow, i need to get a quote from my local garage but im wondering.. to save cash, wheres the cheapest place to get my replacement parts AND how much do you think the garage should charge? i dont want to be ripped off yano

and how hard is it to strip down a clutch? if im honest id rather get the parts and do it myself, ive rebuilt a 69 gt enguine before but never doubt with the clutch

never done a clutch on an ibiza but done loads on the VAG 1.8t engines so cant be much difference. if im honest they're pretty easy, only thing i would say is have a look at the flywheel as well as the dual mass flywheels are an arse for having play in em. if i was you id take this as an opportunity to make some improvements and get lightened flywheel or something like that

Try buypartsby online, they do LUK ones for a good price and as for the garage it shouldn't be more than £200-£250 depending on their rates and wether or not you supply the parts.

Ive spoken to a friend and he says i need a clutch kit? Is this true?

If anyones able to pull up some diagrams id much appriciate it. I want to do this myself so need all the help i can get

Can't hurt to get a clutch kit, by the time you whip the 'box off you might as well change the clutch.

When I bought one for my 1.4 8v that was dead I bought the cheapest I could find (£30 Unipart from ebay) and fitted it & kicked hell out of it for a further two years.

Straight forward DIY job to be honest too

Haha. Well my mother owes me some dollar so might see how much performance ones are, nice to upgrade i spose.

I like the idea of kicking the living crap out of the old one! Sledge hammer has been sat in the shed for ages, it most likely feels unloved sooo

Btw, when you did yours did you do it under the car or was you able to get the enguine out?

Jacked the car up as high as possible (highest setting on axle stands), dropped the gearbox out the bottom & replaced the clutch.

No need or point to drop the engine out (though when I did this later, it was much easier!!)

There's no "performance" clutches out there for the 1.4, so I'd just get a branded replacement - it'll last long enough

Just picked it randomly off ebay... I can't remember the size you need, whether it's 180/190 or 200mm
