Came up against a chap in one of these yesterday and gave it a bit (up to the legal limit of coursr) on a dual carriageway and over a few roundabouts .. whilst I wasn't surprised that the clio handled slightly better, I was astounded at the way that it took off and I only reeled him in slightly at redline in a high gear. My cupra feels like a very quick car mostly and I was slightly humbled by the little French rocket. (to add: there are no issues with my car, it has a dyno printout for 270 HP- but call it 260 for reality sake and I have owned quick metal for the last 18 years so Its not my first nippy car)

No turbo lag, and a lot less weight, linear power delivery means it gets the power down a lot better.

I remember scalping people a lot in my 172

U lost to a clio 182 even with around 60bhp more ( a 206 1.1 power)?? Bit confused

Read the other posts.....

It's how the power gets down. The 172/182's are rockets in these kind of situations. A remapped LCR will shake one off but once past illegal speeds IMO.

Up to 70 the Clio will have got it's power down very well. LCR's needed an LSD from factory!

Don't underestimate the Renaultsport cars!

I miss my 172 daily. There are a few very quick 1*2's out there aswell. I had an ITB'd one with circa 220bhp, I ate a 300+LCR on a session at combe, to the extent i lapped him lol. an LCR with a passenger and a full tank of fuel is circa 1550kg. so say 260bhp = 167 bhp/tonne. a 182 is 157bhp/tonne. Assuming it was standard. Not much in it, but less weight means it can accelerate at low speeds faster.

I get what your saying but a impreza wrx would absolutly kill that clio. And there 225 bhp. Yes the AWD system is a big factor in it.
Makes you think y bother buying a big power turbo car with 250ish bhp when you can buy a lil french shoe with great figures lol. I'm a massive fan of the 192. Thought the 172 and 182 were awfull looking cars but that's my opinion. Cheap tho so i guess its a big plus for young buyers

4 wheel drive is a massive factor. That is a lot better at putting the power down. I have been up against cars with 300+ at the pod. But they are unable to put the power down and so loose their traction. 260-270 is enough for the LCR in my opinion

Lol. From a standing start yes. but thats it, rolling at 20/30 mph the clio initially would own the impreza. until 90/100 when the torque helps the impreza alot. I'll find some speedo vids of my old 172.

Should have never sold my m5 lol. Although the cupra doesn't actually 'feel' that much slower to a ton... bizarre how things play out in real life against on paper

Although the build quality of French cars leaves a lot to be desired and reliabilty. I had a saxo vts brand New and was nothing but hassle. My mate had a Clio 182 and had loads of trouble with it. A lot more tuning potential with a turbo car and they sound the nuts.

i've also got a clio 172 , it will easily out corner my leon cupra r , you do have to rev the little neast to get the power but over 5k rpm not much will keep with my clio sport, the leon cupra r defo feels much quicker in a straight line
