Just got done by the seized bonnet catch! All sorted now but was a right b*tch to get it open. Just a reminder for u all to lubricate your catches before you have to endure sitting on a cold driveway in the semi-darkness trying to open it with a screwdriver as well ! :)

Missed this one, screen wash out n bonnet wouldn't open this morning. How do you get the bonnet open.where do you stick the screwdriver.

Lubricate with motorcycle chain lube, "high performance oil" or similar, not WD40 which will eventually gum up the works. WD40 is only ever a temporary solution, to free up rusted components or to drive off water from electrics.

Sorry, can't help with where to stick the screwdriver, I've never had the problem.

Hi mate, can u open the bonnet the first little bit? i could open mine the first 5mm or so, (i.e when u pull the release handle inside the car), (but the lever in the grill wouldn't come out) If urs is the same then with a bit of gentle force lifting it, you can open it to about 3-4inches without an issue. Then you need to lift up the bonnet as much as u can and you can shine a torch in to see the catch at the back of the mechanism holding the bonnet pin, i soaked it all in WD40, left it 15 mins and then i used a flatheaded screwdriver to push that catch to the left as you look from the front. Hope that helps, now i've oiled it up it works better than it ever has :)

Thanks, I will try tomorrow as the bonnet lifts about 5mm but pin doesn't come out just as you say, tried to lift with finger tips but will get something in the gap and gently prise.

common problem!
every car that ive done lately which has had dealer servicing before hasnt seen a spot of lube on any of the catches or door hinges
last 2 golf plus,s ive done the bonnet has to be lifted using both arms
how much does it cost or take to do the job properly?

I would like to second this as I too have gone to fill up my screen wash and the damn bonnet won't open. Tired 'everything' with no luck. To the garage :(
