Hey guys,

I think my clutch is on my way out, had it slip a few times. Under hard acceleration in a high gear at low revs it will occasionally increase revs without the speed of the car increasing.

I was told before getting it remapped this might be an issue and was suggested to get an uprated clutch if I had issues.

Secondly there is a bit of a whine from the gearbox when there is no load on the transmission. I only seems to do this in 5th.

So three questions...

1) is that whining anything to do with the clutch do you think, and if not any idea what it might be?

2) if I was to go for an uprated clutch, what is the one to go for? I really don't want to spend a fortune as I have only just had the car a month or so!

3) is it really worth getting an uprated clutch or would a standard one be good enough?

Any help much appreciated

yes if you get it remapped you will need a uprated clutch
i fitted a helix kit with dualmass
as for the whine how noisy? gearboxes do have slight whines i would suggest you get someone to listen to it to advise you

no mate
if you map the car you need a uprated clutch as it needs to handle 330ft/lb of torque
the uprated sre clutch can do this lower down on the details at £850
i would only fit a helix or a sach sre

So this one?

When you mention that this clutch needs to be able to handle 330ft/lbs of torque, could you just explain why that is? Before the remap it has 236lb-ft. Does it really boost it that high after a remap? That sounds pretty ambitious.

On a side note, I have been told that a standard clutch replacement on this car would probably be fine, likely to last 70k miles or so. If this is the case, I cant help thinking that spending almost 3 times as much seems a bit crazy..

yes thats the one
my leon runs 197bhp with 327 ft/lb of torque and its a quick car
the standard clutch will not take this power if you drive it reasonably quick after a short amount of time it will slip in 5th and 6th gears
my clutch was in perfect condition when taken out but slipped in the 2 top gears hence the reason it had a uprated clutch fitted
whats the point of fitting a standard clutch and hoping it will be ok
bite the bullet and fit a decent clutch then you wont have to do it again!
it will be cost affective for you in the long run
remember 5.5hrs labour to do clutch book time and the price of clutch/clutches

I have have to disagree with this comment through I have had my pd160 Ibiza Cupra remapped and an running my standerd clutch an have been doing so for 25000 miles and there's no faults what so ever no slipping no nosie. It all depends on how u drive it I also know of some people running hybrid power levels on there standerd clutch.

PLUS THAT CLUTCH from darkside won't fit your mk1 Leon it's for the 2.0l mk2 Leon

Been running my Leon TDI FR with REVO for a year and a half. Replaced the clutch in October last year with a Sach kit from Techniclutch for about £500 with everything included. It appears that the slave cyl provided was faulty, and not sure whether that's contributed but the clutch is slipping again and looking for a new one. Regardless of this, there's still a lot of flywheel judder between 1.5-2.5k revs I'd say.

I've been looking at the Awesome GTI clutch, and if it's true, should eliminate the flywheel judder which really is quite annoying, since pre-remap the car is nice and smooth, and the judder kinda ruins it, even when treating the go pedal nice and easy.

If you're remapped, it's only a matter of time before the clutch gets destroyed quick. In hindsight, having one company do the clutch and remap would be piece of mind, it's not cheap. Also, the REVO is pretty aggressive, great for my previous mk3 Ibiza Cupra (petrol), bad for TDI! Need a more progressive power through the torque peak, which a custom would give you.

Mentioned above, I think the weight difference between a TDI Ibiza and Leon probably contributes to the Ibiza just about getting away with the standard clutch for a little longer. When I was on standard clutch and running on fumes in the tank, a lot less slip, quite noticable.
