Just got my 1.2 Ibiza, and one of the speakers is distorted, I removed the speaker (drilled the rivets out), now I’m abit confused I know the speaker is 17cm but I’m getting confused with the connection, if I buy a pair of 17cm speakers do they need to be specific, like a special connection or something? also can anyone recommend any, not looking to spend alot about £30 for the pair, also once I get them, i will obviously need to attach with bolts so do I need to take that metal housing off the car door? is it just a case of undoing those 12(i think) bolts?

I also want a new heat unit couldn’t get hold of a radio code and seat are charging me £30 so i might as well get a new one, i know something about ISO being standard so do i need a adaptor?

Thanks

Your car should already be ISO equipped, so assuming you buy a new headunit it'll come with a set of plugs that go straight from your cars wiring to the stereo!

Also i'm not sure if it's the same in these 'bizas, but in my old car you can literally just buy any speaker as long as its the right diameter (i.e. 6.5" or 5.25" etc), but keep an eye on the depth - if it's too deep it'll hit the window... In my old car, 65mm was the deepest the speaker could be and any deeper would require you to make/buy wooden speaker baffles to 'space' out the speaker from the door so that the magnet doesn't hit the window!

if u got a mk4 ibiza most hu's you shouldn't need an adapter for as the 1.2 doesn't come with steering mounted controls, so the ISO adapter connections should be pretty straight forward.

I am also thinking of replacing my speakers in the car with upgraded speakers. Ive been looking at the jbl gto-6507c rrp is £100 but a quick scour on ebay shows i can get them for about £40.

Has anyone had experience with these speakers, do they fit!? It says they have a mounting depth of 61mm so i can imagine they fit nicely?

Nate

Thanks for the help, just to clarify if I buy any 17cm speakers; all I would need to do is plug in the adaptor which is attached to the car door into the new speaker?? Simple as that? Also is there any other way of securing the speakers besides from rivets or taking the metal lining off to attach the bolts?

With regards to the HU, i heard i need to get a signal booster otherwise the signal will be to weak is this true?

you shouldn't need a booster, but it depends on the quality of the connection of the adapter into the back of the hu (which you might need), your location in respect of actual quality of FM signal, or whether you listen to MW.

I'm in London so i didn't need one, and signal qualty is practically perfect in and around the city.

the existing speaker wire adapter which is attached to the car door will not fit straight into the new speakers, you will either have to cut the end off and re wire it yourself, or buy a set of adapter rings which come with the necessary plugs.

Also, there isnt a huge amount of depth to mount new speakers. My Rockford T162S have a mounting depth of 68mm and i needed 1" mdf baffles to mount them on! Thats pretty much the limit because now my door card barely fits over the speakersand theres prob 1-2mm max to window!

Taking the inner door skin out as you mentioned isnt just 12 bolts, theres some rivets that you will need to drill out too. To mount my baffles, i drilled 4 small pilot holes thru the baffle into the inner door skin where the original speaker was, and then screwed the baffle to the door with self tapping screws. If your're going to do it this way, you will need to use countersunk self tapping screws so that you can mount your new speakers flush to the baffle.

New headunit is a piece of cake.. as mentioned already, a new headunit comes with the wiring adapter to just plug into your existing wires. You may need an signal booster for it depending on what you get as the original stereo has the booster built in. My radio reception is rubbish but i didnt buy a booster as i rarely listen to the radio.

Also R1ch85, the rivets you are talking about are these the ones around the speaker because ive already drilled these out.

there are more rivets near where the lock barrel is. You need to drill these out if you want to remove the inner skin, but i dont know how id replace them when i want to put it back in.

when i first changed my speakers i used the plastic adapters too, i used spire clips to screw into using the the original holes. this proved reallly fiddly but it did the job, at least until i made baffles. Then i drilled the pilot holes thru baffle and metal and used self tapping screws :)

Need some help guys asap, just went to install the new kenwood speakers and they wont fit properly, i thought it would be a straight swap, the old seat speakers are encased in an oddly shaped circle do i need them, a pair of speaker mounts???

i made a temp soilution, so there fixed now but as there not properly in place im starting to hear a slight vibration, i looked at my original speakers and i dont think the mount that there in wll fit my new speakers,, so what do i do?

wazb you can do it that way but i found them awkward unless u take the inner skin out i made some mdf rings or u can buy some... screw the the rings to the door card quite simple due to useing the inside hole to put ur hands through then screw your speakers to the mdf rings.... :)

screws and them flat nut things that i stuck to the door with dynamat lol through the existing speaker holes.... very easy to do as u have the hole were the speaker that came out to put ur hand through :)
