We had to get recovered today and the RAC guy said the outer CV joint on the drivers side had failed.

Where the best place for a new one and are there any guides to fitting it? Would it be the same/similar to doing it on a mk3 golf? I've got a Haynes for that.

Thanks in advance.

you can get one from: andrew pages,BMS or David cook motors.
an aftermarket one will set you back around £50-70.
you need to jack the bus up, remove the wheel, remove the bottom ball joint nut (21mm), lower the bottom arm out of the way, undo the centre hub nut (27mm), tap the drive shaft through slightly, remove the caliper retaining spring, remove the 2 7mm allen key bolts from the caliper and move it out of the way, remove the caliper carrier (2 x 24mm bolts), pull the suspension leg out as much as you can so the driveshaft pulls away, cut the boot off (the new joint should come with a new boot - BUT MAKE SURE YOU CHECK), knock the old joint off and fit the new one (put the bolt in the threads so you dont damage the splines when knocking it on (you will have to put the new bolt and inner clip on before the joint as well as the 2 clips behind the joint on the shaft, make sure you use plenty of CV grease) then re-build the lot in the reverse order.

just a rough guide - hope it helps

and if that doesnt fix it then the inner half shaft has sheared the splines off on the gearbox flange, my advice would be to get it properly checked out first before you start replacing parts.

Just the job!! Thanks very much. I did it yesterday with help from a mate and it did fix the problem, the old CV wasn't for comming off so I put the 27mm bolt back in and that pushed it out.

I got my new CV off e-bay for a shocking £14.95 plus postage, that was with boot, grease, clips and bolt, it seems great quality. The seller is called J_R2006. The splines on the end of the driveshaft looked a bit worn but came up alright after a bit of a wire brushing.

My mate was trying to explain why neither wheel would turn but I got confused when he got onto diffs and stuff.

Thanks again:)

Quality mate, I'm glad you sorted it and amazed you got a joint for £15!!!
