Mine started doing something similar on the drive home tonight. When i engage the clutch while coming to a halt the revs dropped to just over 500 then picked up again. Every so often it does that while the clutch is still engaged or in neutral with the motor idling. Noticed that the idle speed is probably about 700rpm generally (just below halfway between 500 and 1000), normally it's around 800.

I know I need my throttle body cleaned and reset (this weekend's project), anyone reckon this is linked? The weather has taken a bad cold turn today, could that be affecting this? Coolant temp reached 90 (eventually, slow traffic) and stayed put there so not sure it's a coolant temp sensor fault...

i had simular on my 1.4s mk1 i cleaned the throttle body with some carb cleaner and also did a aservice whilst doing service spark plug one had oil all over it so i think i the person who had the car before i did overfilled it a little bit, note myn also use to stall when slowing down.

As an update on this one, post the service my issues seem to have been sorted.

I had my throttle body cleaned with carb cleaner and that seems to have done the trick. I think this seems to be a sensible solution to the problem as he didn't even charge me for it and it's certainly worth as a first try if you encounter similar problems before replacing anything....unless something is specifically identified through VAGCOM which suggest otherwise.
