I test drove the 150 and thought it was decent quick , quick enough to make me think the 184 must be great, I ordered a 184 without test driving one, the torque and low end shove is addictive!
Did you have a long wait for it.....

Power isn't everything friends (unless your name is Clarkson), I once beat a Lotus Carlton in a Mini 1100 (carrying 3 passengers, one of which was a bit shall we say heavy) because I understood that timing and momentum are more than a match for lots power in the hands of the inexperienced boy racer. One of life's victories that was.

And the mini was turd brown, which I hope is etched in the losers memory.

I only test drive the 184. Thought about 150 but figured I'd always be wondering what the 184 was like if I had the less powerful one.

I kind of got to thinking in spending a load of cash, a little more to get the better one is a small difference in the scheme of things.

I test drove the 150 and 184, both Petrol, DSG. I also tried the Diesel. I thought the Petrol 150 was the sweet spot, after which I'd have got the Curpa (which I took out just for fun, and what fun it was!)

My colleague at work has the Petrol 184 so we've compared, and other than the 184 sounding nicer, we couldn't detect power/brakes/handling improvements on the 184 - perhaps you would on a track. Interestingly, both have identical torque figures, with DSG. The 184 did sound nice (in sport mode) though.

My choice ended up being between the Petrol (150) and the Diesel (150), not between the two petrols.

I think in all honestly (as I'm sure most here will agree) they are all great (and underestimated) cars and great engines. You really shouldn't regret any.

My FR has now done 2000 miles and I'm really enjoying it - it's a fun place to be on that morning commute - and that says a lot. Something else will always be faster, especially with someone driving it who knows what they are doing!

I had the exact same speculations recently. Ended up with a 150 FR TDI, added the DTUK and get same or better performance than the 184tdi standard plus money saved.

I would disagree with this statement.

My Audi A3 150 TDi S-line manual has now been replaced with a Seat Leon FR 184 DSG,

Gearbox asside, the 184 i feel is a much better engine and drives differently - better.

I had a DTUK box on my Audi, and even without the DTUK box felt like it drove slightly smoother.

Now I have the DTUK box on my 184 Leon and it flys.

After driving both - if you can afford the 184 - DO IT! - you will not regret it.

Ive got the 184 FR I didn't test driver the 150 but I had a Skoda fabia VRS 130 standard as the day I bought it back in 2004, the power difference is alot better and smoother I know the car is 10 years younger so things move on but the Fabia was only a small car with a 1.9 diesel sport 6 speed so for me it had to be the 184 and I think if you get the 150 you will kicking yourself or start thinking about buying a box for it and whats the point of that !

Try living in a country where theres 3000£ difference between 150 tdi dsg and 184 tdi dsg, that made the choice between the two pretty clear to me :p

What about ex demo or early new, I personally would not pay £3000 more for 30 b h p I know there better brakes and handling but thats a big difference.

Hi everyone wondered if I could comment also I test drove the 184 and the 150 loved the 184 I had out for the three days also test drove the golf GTD with same engine the golf didn`t do it for me I am afraid I also test drove the 150 and to be honest ware would you do 143mph not this country any way so I felt it a bit pointless also the suspension is different I now that and the breaks also .. only going to benefit if you are going balls out plenty of shove in 150 even lower down cheaper insurance on 150 more mpg also now here comes the broard sword fit a Dtuk crd3 box and its bye bye 184 standard that is fact test drove back to back last week the difference is night and day 184 felt like I was in a 1.6 tdi this is my opinion
cheers

12 weeks was about the same for mine. (150 petrol). I agonised over the engine, couldn't decide on the 150 or 184 diesel or the 150 petrol or the cupra. in the end went for the 150 petrol - little bit of penny pinching but still a cracking engine on the test drive. chose not to go for the cupra as I could already see the speeding fines in the post.

Must say I was surprised by the 150 petrol - felt very smooth, I tested it before deciding on another diesel. We drive ~25.000km a year, so the choice was quite obvious in this regard.

Anyone saying that 184s are like hens teeth second hand should take a look at Motorpoint just now, they've got "hunners". I have a feeling they'll shift pretty quick, literally. Never had any when I got my 150. Typical.
