Yep, sadly that is correct. it cost me the same to tax my Ibiza than it did to tax my honda accord. The Accord was a 2.0i VTEC that did about 30MPG. In all fairness my Ibiza is a 1.9TDI so engines are pretty much the same size but the Ibiza does about 55MPG so i thought i'd get a tax break or something. Guess not though huh? lol

Yep, if the car was first registered before 1st March 2001 then there are two bands - engines below 1549cc pay £115 or £63.25; engines over 1549cc pay £180 or £99.

If it was registered on 1st March onwards then the rate is based upon CO2 emissions with cars in bands A - G based upon emissions. So some cars loose out on this as the flat rate of £180 is somewhere between bands E and F.

However other cars can win - take my S3 for example. Its emissions put it in band G, so it would have been £300 for a year except for the fact that it was first registered in January 2001 so it just sneaks into the flat rate scheme so is 'only' £180.
