I asked David at Sere for a chain but he hasn't got back to me, so might just nip up to my local VW dealer and order one.
If its a chain tensioner/chain problem it would throw a fault. Ive had a fault chain and tensioner and had to replace mine, it was so bad that the chain was actually hitting the calve cover and wearing a nice groove in it. Not good.
The cam position sensor needs to be triggered the same time as the crank sensor and if the chain/tensioner is worn a code of incorrect corelation will be thrown and a EML will come on within a few meteres of running.

The more I listen around the engine to more it sounds like it's coming from the oil pump area, so before I take the cams etc. out I'm going to take to sump off and have a look. I still have my old oil pump, I can refit it if the new pump is knackered. My old oil pump has only done 38k miles.

Well the rattling/tapping has gone all by itself? Not sure whether to pull the sump and check or change the oil pump now, it's totally gone! Perhaps it was a sticking hydraulic follower or something and it's working again now?

Today I managed to get the old stripped rivnut out for the lower strut brace. I ended up making some cuts in the head of it with my dremel, pulled off the bits which took all the head off the rivnut and punched it inwards with a quick tap of a hammer and large screwdriver, only took a few minutes!
The new rivnut went in fine but did take some muscle to get it to compress, it's made of steel! But it's in and tight, the strut brace is back on and bolted up tight - job done!
That's 3 repairs done, 2 helicoiled bolt holes and 1 rivnut replaced.
I also fitted the Powerflex steering rack bush while I had it up on the ramps, what a 'mare of a job but it's done now.
No sign of the rattle/tapping sound anymore, completely gone - weird.

i had a similar noise in the leon i had, it was a "whirring noise" coming from the opposite side to where all the drivebelts where, it turned out it was because I'd drilled and smoothed the airbox so it was the suction sound, but sounded wierd lol, if that makes sense... ive had some koppaburg lol

you do the rack bush with the subframe on rob?
This is the look my car will be sporting for the Scottish national day on June 20th -blacked out and evil!
They look like good tyres rob. I wander how they will compare with the R888... Maybe force toyo to reduce their price!
