I was wondering if anyone can help. Every morning when i reverse my car off my drive and give it a bit of a rev, the car gives off quite a bad smell of rotten eggs. This only lasts for about 10 seconds. I heard someone once say it may have something to do wioth ware and tear of a part but i dont think my 2 month old lcr has much of that yet? Any ideas guys?

guess it's you that smells :bleh: (only joking)

i'm sure you're aware, 95% of engine damage is done in the first 2 minutes of starting, coz the oil hasn't had a chance to "warm up" and circulate the engine in order to do it's lubrication stuff.

have you tried not giving it "some revs" and see if the smell is still there??

i would say, as your car is so new, take it back to your dealer and say that you're not happy!

Vic's still in NY xmas shopping, and i have no inclination to go to bed.

start straw peedoing them (think thats how u spell it)! Back to point though i know bout the engine oil but do usually let the car warm up for 5-6 min minimum. DO u rekon this could still occur??

jim

can't do that, i'll still be hungover when i pick my daughter up from school!!!!!!!!

sorry to hijack your thread!!

when i had the impreza sti, i'd never "boot" it til the oil pressure and temp gauges stabilised, usually upto 10 mins.
Eggy smell would suggest old coolant, but not in your case,
i'd go back to dealer and get them to look at it.
doesn't seem "normal" to me?

cool cheers for advice im off to dealer when my shift finishes as 8 to sort out my persistant squueking noise im still gettin in reverse when breaking!! Bet the sti was fun!!! YOU up to beer 12 yet?

jim

just finished no.10,
i can hear no. 11 calling "drink me",
be rude not to!!

yeah the Scoob was fun, bloody expensive tho!!
still, i did get 0-62 in 4.1 seconds, and topped 100 in 9.1, but that was running optimax with an octane booster!!
had it broken in to twice in ten months, no boot room room due to subs and amp racks, and it was killing me financially in fuel/insurance and repairs!!

glad i don't have the liabilities now, but do miss it occasionally, (especially with the TRAshford Corsa/Nova gang)

hope the "eggy" thing gets sorted?

are you up for Brands track day in Jan that Tris is organising?????

Defo up for track day providing i can get my remap done by then. So depends really whether its late January. Hoping to call Jabba in Peterborough this week to see if i can book it in during beginning of Jan!! So much i want to do but so little money. If worst comes to worst i might have to give this track day a miss. I heard abvout that trip to the Le Mans last year and would be well up for doing that if anyone else was interested!!

The "eggy" smell is the catalyst and is nothing to worry about, it should clear itself with use!

eggy smell is due to oxides of sulphur from the petrol.

do you use the car for short journeys, and what sort of fuel do you use?

Partially sulphur dioxide S02, but primarily Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S).

If you're cat's cold it is not converting these nasty byproducts so they're coming out of the exhaust and if you're reversing the smell will enter the car.

You shouldn't smell this when the engine is warmed up though, if you do it could indicate your cat is poorly - insert vet joke here! ;)

As said before - its defo the cat and as also said before, it should clear once warmed up.

When my cat smells, I usually try it on cooked chicken and rice for a few days...
