I was fitting my mud flaps this morning and noticed this on both sides.... Is this 'textured' look normal?!

Yowsers. Doubt it. Unless you live on Planet Gravel.

...although it matches the texture of the road surface nicely...

well it's identical on both sides so that must be how it was originally. Anyone else with Leon care to check theirs? It's still under warranty, only bought it (privately!) 2 weeks ago. You can't see if unless you bend down and look as it's on the bit of the side skirt that angles down.

Same on mine. Its probably some sort of protection for the sills.

think it's layer of rustproofing/gravel absorber to stop gravel chipping the paint. Bit plasticky.
Can't remember what it's called, but I used to buy it to treat the undersides of my cars back in the day (like nearly 50 years ago)

yep its absolutely normal

though this is a very bad case

been working beside a dealers last 4 months

seen loads like this

makes those pretty skirts I got on mine with sub 8 pack

not seem so expensive after all:D

They used to do this to cars I the 90s to stop rusting

OK, there are a couple of other leon's in the car park at work- I'll have a look at those next week!

It's a rock chip guard, a heavy thick layer (like an undercoat) applied to the bottom couple inches before they paint it body color to avoid stone chips in the paint.

As mentioned it's SGC or Undercoat depending on what Seat use. The picture however indicates its a little on the poor appearence side. Suspect a blocked robot tip or a poor atomisation when applied due to air issue.

I personally think it should have been redone but that's just my opinion. Most cars have this. Some appear better than others.

Most cars now have less and less undercoat applied (in Europe anyway) and tend to have aero packs fitted (plastic) which helps air flow and emissions.

Get rid of the pitted dirt with some tar and glue remover This will shod the embedded crap and make it blend in a lot better. I must admit that mine is a lot 'smoother'.

andrewpain it was called zeibart as far as I can remember

like you say it was splashed all over the lower half of cars in the 80s

it was also used to cover up terminal rust that was endemic in many cars at that time:D

one good way to judge the age of a car was by how far up the doors the black zeibart had got

not really acceptable on a 2016 car - seat need to do better

It was called Zebart I worked there in the 80s they spayed the under side of the car and about 2 inches of the side and drill holes in the bottom of the doors and fill them with a stuff like tar and give a 10 year guarantee if you had it resprayed every year.

I'm probably going to take my car in to get the rear light cluster replaced as I have condensation in it so ill have a look at a few there and see how they compare
