The ones on my mk2 1.4 went again £170 to have them both sanded down, smoothed and resprayed, depends how bad/noticable it is if its small unvisible rust i would use a small wire brush to get it off and touch it up to save cost

saw a little mod on a civic recently, had rubber strips stuck to the insides of the arches, stopping the little stone chips which usually start the rusting process. I'm gona see if I can find anything suitable and do the same, as I had trouble with my 1.4 and rusty arches.

if the arches are showing their rusty face then don't even look behind the red reflector on the boot, the lugs rust through and the reflector hangs off.

Telford ay it...
the only place iv got rust is were the panels join inside the door. :(
all the arch liners are coming off soon so i can clean the arches and apply some bitchumin (spelling) type stuff.

Yeah it is, same for the mk4 polo. On the earlier cars especially the protection on the back wheel arches was terrible. Dustm dirt and grit salt get behind them and then rot through to the front. My T reg has better arch linings than my R reg did, i dont know whether this was something seat did to solve the problem or an addition made by the previous owner though. Best way is prevention by thorough cleaning and Waxoyling or similar.

could it be because both of ours are really low at the back? and the stones flick of the tyres....( my tyres come right under the rear arches)
Urs looks nice by the way.

Mines the same, the clutch is very stiff, especially when cold, but doesn't need a new cable, as got it checked at last service.
I've also experienced the rusty-arches! Only had this on one side though, the passenger side, which was really minor, but I had it cleaned-up and painted on the inside of arch, also undersealed. Alls fine now, but i think it's a common problem on MK2's, and Mk3's I reckon!

my arches started to rust on mine (97 cupra),so i cut off what i could and tacked the end of the seems with a mig welder, then i folded them flat, plenty of room under ther now.big spacers are on the way :D .i found that alloy wheel cleaner can be a big cause for this as it eats the paint like mad!
