Rusty Wheel Hubs

I saw an Audi Q7 with rusty hubs today (worse than my year-old FR), wouldn't be happy if I'd just paid £40k for that!

Never used any wheel cleans on the alloys just a bit of autoglym shapoo in a bucket of water!

mmmmmmm, not a warranty claim, i will ask dealers "are hubs designed to rust and go like this then?"

I guess they will say "well no not really"

FIX IT THEN!!! got to be a warranty issue If its not supposed to happen, break down of materials used by Seat would be my case.

Its steel/iron... its going to rust. not a defect
you have'nt got a hope in hell imho

...No.

My Previous car (New Honda Accord) had painted hubs.

Girlfriend has tourer version and this has painted hubs too.

There is really no excuse for this on a brand new car.

Whats being used when you clean the wheels "Wonder Wheels" ?

I've only ever cleaned the wheels with hot water & shampoo, 10k & 5months later they still look like new .......

I've only ever used Autoglym wheel and have the rusty hubs, had the same of my Celica where I did use Wonder Wheels but to be honest I doubt much of it gets on the hubs anyway.

When I raised the rusty hubs issue with my Toyota dealer the response on a number of occasions "It's the type of metal".

On that car I actually needed to replace 3 or 4 of the alloys on an annual basis due to corrosion, apparently it's the salt on U.K roads that causes all these problems.

I've never used anthing other than shampoo on my wheels and my hubs are rusty.

Noticed the standard Audi & VW logo on them this weekend so guess they're the same.

This is the N/S front and the other 3 are just the same...!

I was going to sand them down and paint/spray them BUT then i thought maybe
i could get it sorted under warranty??

Just to add the car is a 3 month old FR TDi with 18s ;)
As with other threads it is common problem, I would suggest you try using Spirex??heat resisting exhaust paint after you clean up the hubs - it is fairly robust. ..........................

Wheels are not covered under warranty anywhere, prevention is the cure here, every week spray WD40 in location around hubs, 3 years down the line your hubs and wheels will still look new. Too late for you here but think on for next time. takes 30 seconds a week to do all 4 wheels. sorted

New Leons.. or at least my TSFI had the hub painted in silver paint... better than my previous Leon TDI who also used to rust.

I have the same problem with my Leon tdi fr. I am a complete novice with this sort of thing, but i picked up some Hammerite Rust Remover gel today. Will this product have any adverse effect if i use it on the wheel hubs?

Cheers in advance

Walking thorugh the car park at lunch and the following:

Seat Altea XL = Rusty Hubs
Skoda Octy VRs = Rusty Hubs
Audi A3 S-Line = Rusty Hubs

So its not just the seats, its all the VAG group.

I'll be looking at the hubs on collection of my 08 and if any sign of rust then i'll reject it or at least make the dealer aware. So when they get worse the will have to do there best to rectify it!

i'd agree and they always have done it but nowadays with big spoked wheels you can now see it in the open

brush em up before they get worse and paint em ?

either that or stick it in a climate/humidity controlled bubble and look at it :)

My March 07 FR has exactly the same problem on all four wheels. I did try a couple of dealers but no chance of getting anything done under warranty.
I did ding a wheel a few months ago (could have blamed the wife but yeah it was me) and had it fixed at a local repairer. Whilst I was there I pointed out my rusty hubs and he said that he could fix it for £25 a corner using heat resistant paint and include the brake calipers. I didn't think it was a bad deal so I may take the car back for it's birthday !!

I painted the calipers and hubs with black matt engine paint few hours work but nothing hard about it. If my thread is still up I've after pics. Sooner you do it the better less to clean up before you paint :)
