Howdy chaps,

Thought I’d do a quick write up on my MK5 Golf GTI. Never got to do one with my Cupra R so I'll do it with this instead. I have had the car a year now and still loving it, have a build thread on another site so I’ll rob all of the stuff off it an post it here below;

So after a couple of months of being on the hunt... I have finally found the GTI I’ve been looking for and I absolutely LOVE it! Within less than 18 hours of the add going live I had it sitting in my driveway as I wasn’t taking the chance of the car going to someone else.

Sold the Cupra R a couple of months ago and have been on the scout for a specifically spec’d GTI for quite a while and I wasn’t settling for anything less than the spec I wanted so when this bad boy came up I snapped at the chance to take it. Although I did love my LCR (and still really miss it! :cry:) I wanted something a bit more comfortable, fast and practical and the GTI ticked all the boxes.

Been driving a MKV TDI for the last couple of weeks and got so bored of it so I couldn’t wait to get my new one and all that patience paid off. Although it is great getting 2 weeks out of a full tank so I’ll miss that side of the diesel but just slow as hell!

The previous owner had purchased it from the UK in 2008 and has had it ever since. The car came with a full documented service history, fresh rubber, long NCT & Tax so it meant I didn’t have to shell out any more money after which is always a plus. The car also came with a full tank, happy days! :D

Here’s the spec;

2005 VW Golf GTI Black Metallic Pearl Magic MKV DSG 2.0 TFSI

• 18” Monza II Shadow Alloys,

- Coming Home/Leaving Home Lights,

Convenience Pack:

Others include;
• Rear Parking Sensors,
• Cruise Control,
• Central Alarm with Tilt Sensor,
• Multi-Function Steering Wheel with Paddles,
• MFD2 with 2013/14 Updated Maps,
• 10 Speaker Upgrade,
• Centre Armrest with 6 Disc CD Changer,
• Dual Electronic Climate Control,
• Highline Dash,
• Tyre Pressure Monitor,
• Blue Glass,
• Cooled Glove-box Compartment,
• Nokia Factory Hands-free Kit,
• Aluminium Door Trims & Ashtray Cover,

The car came with every factory extra apart from a sunroof and the Recaro bucket seats. So enough of the boring stuff, here are some pictures;

I’m chuffed to bits with the car as there were 5 people behind me trying to buy it so lucky I was first in. Car is extremely smooth and the gearbox is perfect. Bodywork is in great condition, few minor scratches and small car park dents but these will be taken out over time. Looking forward to the weekend to give it a good bath as its filthy dirty at the minute.

No massive plans for the car just yet, the alloys aren’t in the greatest condition so they will need a refurb soon enough. That’ll be done in a couple of weeks. Then I’d probably be looking to put a Milltek exhaust and a stage 1 remap soon to bring it up to a healthy 250bhp+. Then if I feel like I need more power I’ll get it stage 2 ready as I never got to do it with the Cupra R.

Have decided on a few things that I want to do to the car recently as I’ve been trawling through the internet looking for fresh ideas and looking to do something a little different so the car can stand out from the rest. The car suffers from some age related marks so I want to get some bits re-sprayed and then a full detail.

Comments & suggestions are always welcome.

Gave the car a well deserved wash the day after I bought it.

First big mod was a set of R32/ED30 rear lights, brilliant Oem upgrade.

Next Oem upgrades were a set of S3 8P 345mm front brakes and a Forge Twintake. Picked them up for a steal so couldn't say no.

The Twintake was for a KO4 turbo so I contacted forge to get a bung to blank it off.

Changed the look and sound of the car completely! Sounded like Darth Vader with a cold haha!

Next was a set of 20mm spacers for the rear, gives the car a good stance.

Sprayed the front bade matte black, looked really well but the paint kept peeling off due to the poor primer.

Picked up a load of little bits which transformed the interior of the car;

Next I moved into the suspension and braking. Got the S3 brakes powder coated Lambo yellow, came out just perfect, fit real snug behind the alloy and make a huge difference to braking!

I picked up some Apex RDX coilovers for buttons, was going to buy a set of AP ones but went with these because of the price.

458ff99b673ff4e84c96f40d3fb4c65c.jpg

I got a phone call from the garage and when he was going to make a start on the coilovers he'd noticed there was few things that needed to be done soon and was better off getting it all done now while the parts were out. First was the outer CV joint which was on its way out. Next was 2 front wishbone bushes which were looking worse for wear and also the front subframe bolts and spacers as they were a bit loose.

The coilovers were then put on with the rest of the supporting mods and it's completely transformed the steering and handling! The ride is so much better. I will have to do a couple of miles to break in the suspension but it seems amazing so far! I didn't want to go crazy low so it's just sitting at a perfect height which doesn't sacrifice the comfort.

Next was the diverter valve which was completely f****d! I always knew I was down on power but the lads noticed there was a big drop once they took it for a spin. They changed and now it seems to pull so much better and harder through all the gears!

I also got the DSG gearbox serviced as I wasn't too sure when it was done last and the gearbox was feeling a bit clunky!! Feels so much more smoother now and pulls through the gears without any hesitation.

Wasn't too sure when the Cam follower was changed last so thought I might as well get that changed while everything else was being done.

Last thing was the S3 brakes. They are unbelievable!! Compared to the standard 312mm brakes they don't even come close to them and they look uber cool sitting behind the wheel! The yellow finish proper sets them off too.

Here's a list of what was done;

- Fuchs Titan GT1 5W30 Oil Service,
- Oil Filter,
- DSG Gearbox Oil Service,
- DSG Oil Filter,
- Fuel Filter,
- New Diverter Valve,
- New Cam Follower,
- Outer CV Joint Boot Kit,
- Front & Rear Wishbone Bushes,
- Front Left Bottom Balljoint,
- New Ferodo Dot4 Brake Fluid,
- Front Subframe Bolt & Spacer,
- Front S3 8P 365mm Brake Fitting,
- Apex RDX Coilover Fitting,

Here's a couple of sneaky pics;

It was a completely different car after all the mods had been put on it, was absolutely in love with it!

Another small mod I done was a dark cherry hazard switch, small touch to the interior that made a big difference!

Sprayed the front grill strip yellow to match the brakes and make it stand out a bit more from the red. Came out a little bit more orange than yellow.

So I’ve been on the hunt for a while now for a new set of wheels for herself. Was looking at loads of sets but didn’t want to buy something that’s common on every Gti around. I looked at BBS CH’s/VZ’s as they suit the car extremely well but are very common on a MK5. I then liked the look of a lightweight racing wheel so was looking at Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2’s & Compomotives, had gotten a decent quote for them new only down the road from where I work and was gonna order them the following week until I got a message of a forum member on here (Seanie VW) saying that he had a friend (ulick) who was looking to part with a set of wheels that he had for sale. A phone call or two later and I was out to get them!

I am after the OEM look and these wheels were ones I’ve wanted for ages but couldn’t justify paying the heavy price tag on them. I personally think between these and the pescara’s, these are the nicest OEM wheel for the MK5. I decided to bite the bullet and went with them and I’m glad I did! I am so excited to start working on them and get them on the car as soon as. My Monza’s are in pretty bad shape so made me want to get new shoes more and more!

So here they are, a set of 19x8.5 Audi BBS Speedlines 2 Piece Splits.

I gave them a good wash yesterday to have them ready for the weekend. The wheels themselves are in decent condition, the lips are in a serious need of some TLC so me and Glenn S3 are gonna have a go at polishing them on the weekend to bring them back to life. I plan on giving them a full refurb soon enough maybe even a nice powder-coat. They came with genuine BBS bolts and Audi centre caps as well which was a bonus! Unfortunately they came without tyres and tyres for 19”alloys are fairly expensive so I will be on the hunt to get some, I’m looking to get x4 Michelin Super Sports in 235/35/19. I’ve read some serious reviews on these tyres and they seem to tick all the boxes, but they do come in at a serious retail!

My R32 rear bumper was also left up last Saturday to be colour coded and should have this back next week, I will upload some pics of the job once I get them. I also got the correct toe eye cover for the lower diffuser as VW gave me the wrong one last time. All I need now is a cheeky Milltek and I can go ahead and put it all on.

dn't really take a lot of pictures as my hands were filthy from the wet sanding :lol:

We got the guts of two lips finished, i have to go back to Halfords to get more sandpaper to attack the heavily scratched lips. I'm hoping to have these finished before next week and I'll get tyres ordered so hopefully by the weekend, I'll have them fitted :D so excited to get these on as I hate just looking at them sitting in my back garden!

Next few bits to come were new tyres, a Milltek cat back (R32 style) and my bumper. Was a fairly expensive week this hahaha!

And this is what my back garden looked like!!

019fe8d405a27a9fab38cce35154a78d.jpg

So after weeks of waiting around and hardship (from the mother) I finally got around to fitting the wheels, bumper and exhaust. I can honestly say I am now thrilled with the look of the car! It came out even better than I had thought.

First thing to go on was the R32 bumper and exhaust. I had left this in with a VW specialist out my way as I'd struggled to get someone to do it. He done a cracking job! Everything fits flush and fits perfect!

Seeing as I don't have a Milltek Downpipe, I couldn't fit my 3" decat so I'm on the hunt now for a Downpipe to complete the system.

fcb32f37ed53a7054de039249eb16a0a.jpg

Next thing was the wheels, oh what a pain in the @rse these were! Hours and hours of sanding and polishing and there's still more work to do on them haha! I've been waiting months on the missing titanium bbs bolts to arrive from Ulick but he hasn't bothered to send them so I'll have to buy them online somewhere.

7db090b838630584688091fbe00eb628.jpg

Went up to a local fella yesterday to fit the wheels so loaded up the car and was up there at the crack of dawn to get them on! They got hat taught to work on fitting the bolts and then fitting the tyres. Even though I'm missing bolts I still had enough to run the wheels.

2e9fd576ee5c084e06771422f50c8c96.jpg

So the wheels were balanced and up the car went to swap over the wheels. First to go on was the rear wheels and once fitted I couldn't even get a finger nail under the arch! With the 20mm spacers on the back the wheel was completely tucked and it looked amazing!

3aecc5423cd336303f3e3851d3970137.jpg

Then the front ones went on and it was the same again, there was only a few mm in between the tyre and the arch. So loaded everything up and was on my way, after about 30 seconds of driving down the road there was a really bad knocking and got more violent as I kept going so turned around and went straight back up to the lads. Took off the front wheels and noticed that the back of the wheel was knocking off the Coilover ring and had taken chunks out of the metal, had to swap over the front wheels and remove the rear spacers just so I could get home!

Was straight out to halfords then to buy a spacer for the front, found a 3mm one for buttons so I bought it and got to work on fitting it. Seeing as it wasn't a hub spacer and doesn't sit flush with the hub it was a bit of a nightmare to fit! But after a little playing around I finally got it fitted! Drove her around the block and there were no funny noises or knocking so I was happy out!

So here is the finished product, pictures aren't great.

The car is still very low and the front keeps bouncing up into the arch after any imperfection in the road so I'll have to raise the suspension at some stage today as it's driving me mad having to snail everywhere i drive hahaha.

Hope you's enjoy the pictures.

Over & out.

Some very nice mods here, bumper & exhaust do fit very well

Thanks pal, a lot of work has went into it! Favourite mods is the rear, makes a massive difference over standard bumper and exhaust!

Looking good ,another little mod if need be is to upgrade the boot badge to a mk6

Cheers dude, forgot to put it in the build above, I have already done it hahaha.
