the 1.4 16v lump has been used for a long time and proven to be a reliable lump, make sure the service items are kept on top of such as oil changes, plug changes and timing belt and you have yourself a good little engine.
Well i had a minor problem on the 35,000 km mark. The car wouldn't start properly, and on idle it would be a little rough. The dealer claimed that he cleaned the throttle body, and everything went back to normal. Other than that its amazing and economical 240 km/20 liters I keep it serviced on time, and as mentioned above its just dull to drive.
No problems yet, don't get my wrong I work on volkswagen vans for a livin so turbos are fun until a customer spends £1000 on a turbo, they might be fun but expensive when they go wrong
Having owned both I can agree with this! My 1.4 TSI has been a nightmare for reliability. The timing chain stretched and needed replacing in the Summer then last month the turbo went. Without the turbo it was actually slower than my old 1.4 N/A Ibiza!
