Hi all,

MILLIONS of threads regarding keys i know, but reading them doesnt seem to help me :/

went to my local Seat dealer yesterday and enquired about getting a new key for the car as i only have one. They told me without the little plastic fob that comes with the car they cannot, and will not give me a new key.

I was under the impression if i take the V5, my driving license down they would cut the key and program it to the car?

They have told me that i have no chance of getting a key coded to the car... is this the car or are they having me on??

I dont really want to be buying keys off ebay etc if i cant get it coded to the car.

I currently have one two button remote key.

Reading the millions of threads has only confused me further :/ some say i can code my own key... some say you cant.

cheers,

Tom

I spoke to a dealer in acocks green (Birmingham) last week as I lost my keys and they said I needed V5 and proof of ID to get a replacement that would take upto a week to arrive, so they can offer it as far as I am aware.

if you give them the VIN and proof of your id then they can order a pre-cut blade or flip type key direct from seat, this will have the correct profile blade and correct transponder chip ready to be programmed.

i take it that it was a parts man who you spoke to?

99% of the time parts staff or reception staff dont have a clue what they're on about and it takes a conversation with a technician to get the info you need.

but in short - yes they are talking crap.

just been down... must have been a temp parts guy as the guy i just spoke to (greg for info - colchester Seat) said you can get a key cut and programmed... £175 though!

OUCH!

Now i have to work out if i can program my own key... £175 for a key... no chance!

cost me £120 for a replacement key only so key and remote doesn't sound too bad to me

Believe me mate its not that simple at all, by the time you've tried and tested different locksmiths, ebay gear etc etc etc you'll have spent more than £175 in time and effort alone.

hmm i will have a word with a mate who's heavy into Vags... see what he says.. £175... im still in shock.

Is that not for a flip key? I got prices from 3 dealers and the prices for a non flip fob were £137, £146 and £143.

nope £175, supplied, cut and coded..

Such a nice bloke there, but i cant justify the spend... although the guy i spoke to before (from 1st post) was having a laugh.

*edit*

the absolute DIAMOND at Seat colchester has said they can try and program a key to the car for £60+Vat.

worth noting guys...as you can get a key cut for next to nothing these days... so say £80 all in?

exactly...

this is the email and the response:

My Email:

Hi xxx,

Sorry to be cheeky, is there any way I can get you guys to extract my car's SKU code if I was to bring it down to you, with the V5 and my license?

I have a copy of vagcom, and can program my own key if I get the SKU from the car... but you need VAG Tacho to do this, which i dont have access to.

I have bought a key from ebay, and I can get that cut to the car... but i just need the transponder matching to the car.

Thanks,

Their Response:

Sorry, never heard of this code . VWG may have different terminology. We are, however, unable to release any coding.

We can attempt to code keys for you for £60.48 inc vat. You would need to bring V5 as previously mentioned.

:)

Why not buy a key off Ebay with a blank blade. Get Timpsons to cut the blade to match your old one and get SEAT to program the new transponder to your car?

agree Booya
i did and seat charged 25 to code so can start car.
cannot set the unlock part as i remove dthe key lock for security on car before doing this.
so i have x2 flip key that can start the car & open boot but not remote unlock it!! read many a thread on this and seem code for remote is no go, need key in door to do.

hmmmm

I thought you could code the PCB part (locking/unlocking) to the car yourself by following the guides on here? When it's the transponder chip (disables the immobilizer) that SEAT has to do for you.
