Hi,

My Seat Ibiza 6J is making too much noise...
Is this sound normal?
youtube.com/watch?v=S4KlnQaL_MI
It sounds like a diesel!!!

What could it be?

Thank you!

Sounds like mine on a cold morning.

Is it only when the engine is cold, ie, first 10 mins of use? Or in very low temperatures?

If so, it sounds like the tappets are getting gunked up which is pretty harmless and inevitable as the engine ages.

Sounds quieter than mine when it's cold! I also have the 1.4 16v engine.

My tappets have been noisy off and on for 2 years. Seems to help with regular oil changes and an engine flush to get out the crap.

Mines really noisy at the moment so I'll be getting the oil changed shortly.

Just something that is put into the engine to clean it out after the oil is drained then it is also drained and fresh oil is put in.

Although the ops is a 6J Ibiza, The 1.4 engine in my MK4 is also used in the MK5 so this is possibly why hes put it in the mk4 section.

MK... is complicated. Wikipedia says that Ibiza 6J is Mk4 :p
I'm less worried if yours sounds like mine :)

I'm searching on youtube and each engine has a diferent sound even in identical models. Is that true?

Look at this one with only 101 KM:

Is it safe to use the car like this?

To be fair mine sounds 100 times worse than yours. When i start mine I just take it easy until it warms up but I have found that the noise gets worse with the colder mornings.

Mine has been like this since Sept 2011 and the only way I can temporarily sort mine is with the engine flush / fresh oil which is what I will be doing shortly again. There is also a breather pipe in the back of my engine which was cleaned out and helped a bit.

EDIT: Ive also used stuff like Wynns hydraulic lifter fluid but it didn't do a thing!

Mine sounds like the engine in this video at approx 1.11 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjP5SanPj-Y

The noise on mine goes away after a few mins. The temp gauge will obviously tell you the oil temp, normal running temp is 90deg.

I have to pay attention but I don't think that mine goes away even after more than 30 minutes.

How many miles/km has your car?
Mine has 110.000 KM

It seems that as the engine warms up it makes less noise but still more than expected for a petrol engine...

If the tappets are really worn / gunked then the noise may not go away when warm. My girlfriend's 2001 Mk3 Ibiza sounds like a bag of spanners going through a washing machine when cold. Even an hour's thrash along the motorway doesn't make it any quieter. But it's sounded like that for 4 years and yet is still going strong.

Last night I had the engine on for 20 minutes listening the noise and the noise was almost the same.
I don't understand a thing about engines but listening to the noise in person, I would bet it's the belt... Looks like something hits something repeatedly while moving at a very high rythm. Much higher than in the video you posted here at 1.11.
I will try to make another video because I think the phone camera changed the noise.

Sorry to bother you guys again...
New video...
The noise I'm talking about, you can see at 01:35, 02:55 and 03:35 never goes away.
Please just take a look at the video and help me undestand if something is wrong.
Also the car lately sometimes it's hard to start... What could it be? Battery?

It doesn't sound any worse than mine, but if you are worried about the belt then you should always get it checked. It shouldn't cost much to get a reputable place to take the cover off and have a look inside. When was it last changed anyway (in both miles and years?)

Maybe this will make you feel better.. it's my GF's Mk3 Ibiza 1.4 MPI. People always assume it's a diesel..

Always sounds like this, even after a hard drive. Kind of glad I took this video today since as you can see it's also not starting very well, need to have a look at it properly at the weekend.
