Seat Leon MK2 timing belt change intervals

I thought I should come back to this thread and post an update that will hopefully help others in the future looking for this information;

Basically, what happened what I phoned the mechanic and he advised he suggested a change ~100,000 miles because he thought it would have been done at 50k and then should be done at 100k.

I then phoned the Seat dealership where the service and timing belt change was done in September 2010 (at 60k) and they advised that Seat *changed* their recommendation over the past 18-24 months to change the timing belt every 40k on every Seat.

Considering the car is still the same car as it was when it was registered in late 2008, then I see no reason to change from the 60k miles interval for a timing belt change. Unless anyone knows otherwise?

In the instance i'm going to wait for another 10,000 miles, which will take it to 110k, before I do a timing belt change.

Fine, but you are going against Seat's advice and that's your choice. There are plenty of threads arguing for and against, but as I said in a previous post, it's byebye engine if you backed the wrong horse.

I'm not completely adverse to changing the timing belt, it's more that I don't want to change it for the sake of it, as you know it's not a cheap job.

I understand the implications of a snapped timing belt, but what i'd like to understand is why do Seat suggest replacing a timing belt every 40,000 miles? Also, i'd like to point out that they told me that is for ALL Seats!!! Now, think of this from another perspective - my Dad is a salesman who does between 30,000-40,000 miles per year. If he drove a Seat Leon for talking sakes he would have to replace his timing belt every year? Surely that can't be normal?

There's cars out there that have them done every 100-120k miles - what makes Seat so different from everyone else?

Ive just bought a 57 plate Leon FR TSI DSG with 33,000 on the clock. It has full Seat service history and also bought from a Seat dealership. Looking at the log book the belt hasnt been replaced yet, should I be worried and should I be asking the question to the dealership as they have serviced it on the 6th of this month

Just been reading all the posts on here. If its recommended that a belt be changed at 40000 miles then my advice is pay it and get it done. There's obviously a reason why it's been reduced. Yes it means more profit in servicing but who said VAG will get the work!? I wonder how many drivers generally have had the balls to admit they should have had a belt change sooner after their engine has blown up because they didn't get it done? Doubt they will be gloating about it on here do you!?
Also noticed that the figure 60000 is mentioned. Is there some confusing with miles and kilometres by any chance?
Funny how so many drivers on here ( on the site ) are willing to spend loads on beefing up their sound system but to pay for a worthy precautionary belt change suddenly seems too expensive!? :)
It's a funny world we live in :)

Hello guys
Can someone to explain me why the timing belt have to be replaced after 4 years or 60000 miles what to comes first.
I am aware of that after 60000 miles is the timing belt worn but after 4years if my car has just done for example 40000 miles it means the belt is not worn and I still can drive 20.000 miles to bring it for replace.
I can`t understand why after 4 years if the car has done just 40.000 miles

A bit like how a packet off crisps might contain 30 crisps and go out of date on 21st of February

If you don't eat them all by the 21st you have to replace them with another packet, regardless of how many you have eaten!

I got mine changed as a condition of sale, it has done 43k but is nearly 8 years old. As far as I can tell, it was never changed so made sure it was done now. Also, because the belt was changed, it is now covered by my 2 year warranty.

If anyone is still in doubt about doing it, think: 200-300 quid now and piece of mind, or nothing now and potential ££££'s later for new engine/car?

Our mk5 golf tdi was 4 years or 40k. My Kia was 100k or 8years though!

If you're 2.0 TFSI then yeah according to the manual.

There is the feeling that it should be changed after 5 years or 120k whichever is first I believe.

Interesting read. My PD170 has the belt and impeller aswell, but can't remember when that was, must look at the paperwork.

With every belt change does the belt, rollers etc need changing?

Regarding cam chains. All motorbike engines have them, my Honda does with a cam chan tensioner, the tensioner needs resetting or replacing as the chain stretches, or the I rings do as chains do stretch. But bike engines are more strung and rev higher than a car engine.

I'm not sure they necessarily "need" changing but like anything it's probably good practice and not worth leaving them, it's a kind of "while you're there you might as well do it" kind of job I think.

Came here to post that they recommend changing based on time OR mileage because the material will break down over time. It makes sense to do it regularly.

I may have mentioned this earlier in the thread but the official Seat line is to do it every 40,000 miles - and that is words straight from Seat themselves.
