Selling Car with Private Reg...

Hi All,

Car could be going this weekend, but the reg has currently been sent back to DVLA for me to retain it.

If this person wants to take it this weekend, there isn't any V5 present - would you A) Drawn up an agreement which states he has taken it this weekend and we agree I send the V5 to him? I have done this previously (or should I say the buyer of my old car did) but the plate arrived on time anyway or B) Wait.

Thanks

I would say option A, assuming the buyer is OK with it. I have done this in the past, and also sold a car with my personal plate on, with a written agreement that the plate remains in my ownership and will be transferred at the earliest opportunity.

Every time I get into this I am convinced that you must be able to transfer ownership of a car and retain a personal plate from it at the same time, but I have never found a way, and I have always done the two separately. Maybe someone on here might know?

Thanks for that bete noir!

I found the old agreement I had in place with the buyer of my vRS and we did something similar, like I said the plates arrived the day of sale so wasn't an issue but we made it a legally binding should we need it. I guess I am OK with it, just always feel a bit strange letting your car leave with your plate on it.

Just for info guys, DVLA now offer an online system.

I have therefore put the private reg on retention this morning, very quick and easy to do! You pay the £80 with a card, it then gives you the replacement reg to stick back on it!
