how long will a turbo diesel engine and a turbo petrol last, given the proper care and attention?

How long is a piece of string? And which diesel engine? And which petrol engine? And how is it driven? How many miles does it cover per day? What sort of roads is it driven on? Is it city driving or motorway driving? Is it used every day or only occasionally? What quality of oil is it serviced with? Does the drive have a heavy right foot? Are you fed up with these questions?

There are so many variables it's a question that will never be answered. You cannot say one will last longer than the other as you cannot put them under the same pressures. Because they both drive very differently, they will be treated differently. The fact a diesel produces power lower down in the rev range means it's likely to spend it's life at lower revs than a petrol, for a start.

It's an impossible question and all anybody can do is guess.

proper care and the car will last bout 500k, turbo will prob need done on LC/LCR/FR at about 200k.

we were dicussing VAG engines. a guy in work insists that the older non turbo petrols and modern turbo diesels are vastly more reliable and have twice the lifespan of a tubo petrol. i argued that he was talking balls and said i'd ask some people who might know a bit more about it.

rob m - jesus, thats a lot of questions :L but for arguments sake i'd say average driving on a mixture of roads on a 50 mile commute so on and so forth. just average use with maybe a little bit of right foot abuse ;)
