Ive no apparent power loss, the MAF that is. It has now 106,000 miles. Is it unusual for it to last this long? Or am i lucky? Im wondering because of the mileage should i change it. Even though it doesnt seem to have lost power would i have lost a few bhp because of the mileage on the MAF?

Yes, if you're that paranoid you can try a clean on it. Just for your peace of mind.

Better yet, if you know a jeweler or a tattoo-guy then ask them to use their ultra-sonic cleaner [with your isopropyl poured in] to clean it. Works a treat I swear.

one of the reasons im wondering is because the last couple of days something doesnt seem right. This week ive noticed a drop in MPG from say 43 to 38 ish on the same hi speed run. Friday, even though i did a lot of short trips, i got only 32mpg by the end of the day. Ive never seen it that low before.

Now today ive noticed something else, a few times it didnt seem to pull as hard but then it seemed ok ish, ive noticed a few times the throttle response wasnt great, took a little longer to get going, also i noticed a few times i have to have the accelerator pushed further down for a given speed, this was more noticable only today.

What are the usual symptoms with a MAF failing on a PD?

no, cleaning it well [i.e. with ultra sounds cleaners] will bring it back to normal life.

I'd say first try the vag com logs, then, if you see like the maf is failing try give it a clean and see the difference via vag com.

BTW, cleaning will require much more than 5 mins because of the dryin time. You GOTTA leave it dry at the ambient air, DON'T USE A COMPRESSOR TO DRY IT!!!
I'd suggest you leave it in isopropyl alcohol say before dinner [no, wait, what's the dinner time in northern countries - we eat quite later compared to you IIRC], then take it out after say 2 hours and leave it dry the whole night, near or over a radiator could be ok. Then, next morning you get up 5 mins earlier and mount it back before going to deliver the bread

Well i whipped it off and gave it a good spray with servisol contact cleaner, stuck it back in and went for a drive. then it was :wtf: i could just barely go to 60! But.... what a wally, i forgot to reconnect the MAF plug

I drove 40 miles tonight and it felt back to normal :) hopefully it will stay that way.

still gotta understand why the cel comes on with the maf unplugged only on some cars,,,

glad you're sorted tho now. the fastest breadvan of the west is still working ok,,, :hide:
