Hi folks,

I've got a new job starting middle of next month (hoorah!)

Anyway...

I'll be doing a fair bit of travelling, I currently live near Colchester, Essex. And the job will involve travelling to

CM postcoded areas (Chelmsford, Brentwood, Harlow, Bishops Stortford etc)
Cambridge
Peterborough

Now obviously the first 2 arent so bad, but Peterborough is quite a way. It's not like i'll be going there every day, but I just realise its gonna be putting a lot of miles on the Cupra.

It's currently on about 56,000, I'll get 31p a mile for first 200 miles, then 23p a mile thereafter, not sure how many miles i'll be doing or how much it genuinely costs to do that in the Cupra.

Is it worth changing it for a more economical car? To try and make more money from the mileage pay, I was thinking something like an Astra or Focus, even though I hate them both. Maybe even a Seat Ibiza but not a Cupra...

Convince me the right option....!

If you get 31p a mile you can claim a tax rebate off the Inland Revenue on the difference between that and the amounts they allow for (currently 40p a mile I think) so even though it may put a load of miles on the car it can actually end up making you money.

Check out here for more details... http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/mileage/employee-factsheet.htm

Don't forget to factor in the cost of tyres, brakes and servicing though as fuel is only a small amount of the total cost.

this is only true if you don't recieve a car allowance. I do mega miles, but i don't care if it costs me to use my car for work purposes, if i'm doing a lot of miles i'd prefer to do it in a car i love and love driving. Then again i'm not looking at selling mine, it will be stripped once i can afford to insure 2 cars. therefore best of both worlds.

It's your decision though.

Ahhhh I never knew that Ken... Thanks for that mate, I wont get a car allowance no, just the 31p mile for first 200 and 23p thereafter.

So does that mean...

When im getting 31p, I claim 9p...

When im getting 23p, I claim 17p?

On an example if I did 2000 business miles a month...

800 x 9p (first 200 miles is 31p) = £72 a month
700 x 23p (over 200 miles, 23p) = £161 a month

233 total x 12 months = £2796 a year?

So if its an annual payment, I'll end up geting about that a year from Inland Revanue? Assuming I did 2000 miles a month, or use that theory for whatever amount I do...?

i would go buy a mk4 Tdi 130 or evena golf mk4 tdi 130. Remap and equally as quick as a mk3 cupra if not quicker. But the economy will prove its worth in the end.

Only reaosn mine has gone is that i do not use my car to get to work, i use the train.

quicker ur joking right? a tdi 130 wouldnt touch a cupra:lol:

a remapped one wouldnt be that far short, looking at 180 bhp and 270ish ftlbs..

As said a golf gttdi 130/50 or the cheaper bora 150 tdi sport, remap...190bhp, 50 mpg.

Ive had similar thoughts about selling mine, im moving to london and will need to commute to northampton a couple times a week plus driving in london too, but im kinda thinking that although getting a diesel would be the answer, i dont think its that easy.
I wouldnt get more than about 6k for my cupra, decent mk4 golfs cost at least 9k, id love a facelift leon but i dont have 12k plus and im not that keen on the new shape ibiza unless a cupra, so basically the 3k id have to chuck at a new car plus then getting it remapped etc, i may aswell use for petrol on my cupra for the next year and enjoy it!

meh....i reset my mpg counter as soon as i joined the M4 the other day...52mpg..

over 200miles i averaged 39mpg driving average, occasional blast

would never sell it just for fuel savings! too, its not like the diesels are still getting 60mpg when there foots to the floor

sounds like if your correct about the figures, it could be quite beneficial to keep it

At the end of the day long journey's in the cupra aren't bad. i was getting 360miles to a tank on a recent weekend trip. Around town it's a different story. You won't get as nice car as the cupra for the money, and most diesels at the under 10k are quite likely to have high mileage there fore the interior is worn etc, i think your best off keeping it.

I agree! I spoke to someone the other day and they said they only get about 45mpg in their diesel! I have got 44.3mpg in my Cupra before

Remember, rush = regret

Yup, my mk5 Golf TDi company car does 44mpg and i could get 37mpg on the same (long) journeys in my A3 1.8T. Plus diesel costs more and i find the diesel engine a pain in stop/start traffic jams.

If my company would let me i'd use the A3 for work miles and claim the expenses.

Are you having a laugh, is he having a laugh???No of course not mate, another person who has little understanding of what a remapped tdi 130 can do by the sounds of it.

i had a mk4 ibiza fr 1.8T pushing out 230+ bhp and that was fast, however when i changed to the Tdi which was pushing out 185 bhp and 330 lb/ft the tdi felt a lot faster. and with 15 sec qtr miles it was'nt too far behind.

in fact my new Cooper S actually feels quite dull compared to the Tdi, obviously it takes a while to change the driving style back over to petrol.

And ibiza Tdi mk4 130's start at 5.5k and for a low milage example can be had at 7k onwards.

Mine on average does between 40-44 mpg no problem and i wouldn't change it for a diesal to save maybe £5-10 a week! Just make your own lunch lol

You have all convinced me, im keeping it for definate.

I already know that for the money you can sell the Cupra for, there isnt a better car out there, and if I wanted to add more money to what I sell the car for, then im defeating the object of saving money.

I've just forked out £300 on an exhaust too, lol.
The red and black seats...The comfort...Etc!

It's here to stay!

Ant FR > Your advice is not in vain either mate, as it is certainly the intention to upgrade to a MK4 at some point, I am now considering a TDI for when I finally ,make that move :)
