I'm a few years out of practice but did buy a timing kit, i'm just stumped by the way it's running so a 2nd opinion is worth it to me.

I never did mess with many diesels.

As it turns out I got it bang on, and no fault codes stored... the mystery continues but I'm just going to drive the thing for a while.

If it's only 55000 miles on it I would very much think that the turbo is not the cause by means of worn seals or bearings. Maybe the cat or emissions systems are not quite performing correctly. I have vcds-lite and it can be used to check the egr cycle duty and injector quantities to see if everything is as it should be. I know you said it had no fault codes but maybe a run and log would tell you more.

I might need to stump up for VCDS, I have added some injector cleaner into the fuel tank and will let that run through concentrated for a day or 3 then fill up.

Might get it to a diesel specialist in the area (any recommendations in South Yorkshire?) if that doesn't work.
My next day off is Tuesday so the car will get a nice long run to clear it out.

Had a brainwave today, could it be low fuel pressure at low revs? Then got a strong smell of diesel through the blowers this morning waiting at traffic lights on the way to work... I know it's not the filter or lines because I've been over those, so what could do both of those? Tandem pump gasket!

So rang the VW dealer, they had 3 on the shelf and £9 including the vat, bought and fitted one and it appears to be less smokey but there's still some... Maybe the fuel rail in the head needs a proper blast to purge it fully so I shall do that on Sunday on the way to work.

My turbo failed at 41k miles, just after I bought it. Apparently there have been quite a few low mileage failures of these turbos according to my local indi.
My symptoms were exactly as Stonsie describes but I also had the classic "owl" sound when on boost.

Well the new gasket fixed the fuel smell... Still leaves a cloud of smoke setting off from traffic lights, sometimes virtually none, other times the car following me drops back a good few yards.

Problem is that I've had 2 different mechanics tell me it's not oil smoke, the guy who double checked my timing has been in the job for 40 years and said he couldn't get it any better which rules out injection timing......

Do Shark performance do diagnostic work? Mansfield is not too far really and I'm getting to the point where I just want it done.

Did your old tandem gasket was broken ? Or any sign of damage ?

And how difficult was to replace this gasket ?

Strangely there was no sign of damage, it's a steel shim gasket and usually you can re-use those so I did, but these have a rubberized coating which didn't like being asked to seal again.

As for changing it, it's a fiddly job and you need a ball ended 6mm allen bit to get around the coolant fitting on the end of the head*, and the airbox has to come out. I also had to sacrifice an old towel to catch the diesel that came out of the pump and head.

*I still don't know it's proper name, usually it would be a thermostat housing but that's on the front of the block (and a sod to get off without removing the alternator).

Confirmed that it is the injector seals. I was advised that they would be ok to re-use by someone whose advice I nolonger value very much but anyway, no point dwelling on that, the parts are ordered and will be here on Thursday.
With the rising oil level I won't drive the car again until it is fixed, even though I am on lates this week and will have to catch the night bus home... Or freeze on the bike... I'm taking the bike, late night + loud bike + tunnel = :rocker:

Here's hoping. I'm sure you can't wait to get tinkering again and get it sorted. I'm waiting for a tumble dryer bearing to get the laundry back on track. How did we ever live with a horse and cart and a river and big drying rock :D.

Got the parts, and printed off some hints and tips from Elsawin... Now if this rain would bugger off I can get on with it, I've had enough problems without getting water in the fuel system... I need a garage.

I need a garage too. I had to change a shock absorber on a ford fusion last year in the snow and we're due 8 inches of it soon and I still have a bit more car work to do. No harm but I hope that it's just England getting the snow and not over here. :D

I hope that changing all the seals on all the injectors sorts it, just backing it off the ramps it was smoking like mad but then again it will do. Having a well deserved coffee then a mixed run starting with some motorway to get it warmed up properly then country lanes.

you could see how much oil there was in the fuel filter thats usually a giveaway of the injector seal quality

There was no oil in the fuel filter at all, clean as a whistle in there. What it was doing was after a few seconds of idle it would fire a cloud of grey smoke out of the exhaust, I had it confirmed that this was unburned diesel... The oil level was also rising.

Note the use of past tense, it's fixed :funk:

There were a couple more clouds on the way home but once upto temperature, Nothing at all so probably some residual crap somewhere... And my central locking has started working properly too, all on it's own.

This car is a strange one.
