Software Update

Do here is a salutory lesson ...

We are on holiday abroad. The Cupra Born system said it needed an update. No problem I thought, we're going to spend a half hour shopping, it'll be finished by the time we get back. .... Two hours later it is still updating. We are paying car park charges and can't move the car, nothing works. Then we get a low battery indication for the system battery. Really worried now. Phoned the dealer, no help. Completely stuck. Tried the SOS button but again no help. After 2.5 hours, and having someone boost the system battery, the update completed.

Lesson? Never update unless you are at home!

That will be the slow data link on the Internet of things 4g data they buy I would think. They have been moaning about that on other sites. It's known that the data link isn't fast since it's cheap data to Vag, covers all of Europe via telecom agreements (EE in the UK is the provider to that Spanish company). When 4g gets weak it reverts to 3g, then to 2g . People are moaning about this on traffic data which is updating slowly. More severe if it's a firmware update.

I'd put that down to the datalink rather than the process time to do it. I did hear one conversation at my local dealer where they said you can't have the car back today... the update is taking a time 🫣.

Good tip. Only do an update at home with a charger handy 👍.

I'm having all sorts of issues with the Mar25 update. The car got bricked on my drive (even handbrake locked) following a failed update. CupraCare was excellent, got the car driving; but 2 ECUs were not updated. Booking into dealer. 3 weeks later and a complete set of ECUs and ADAC recalibration it's home.
App now reporting car is unlocked - it isn't.
Sometimes the app reports the lights are on. They're on Auto, had to toggle Auto off and back on to reset this one.
Charging was left incompatible with Zappi Eco+. I've figured out this requires 'Plug-in Charge' in the Eco+ menu to be set.

I sometimes get vehicle not locked or lights left on when all is ok. I suspect its because the 'final signal' hasn't been received by the app for some reason. If you request a data update in the app this usually sorts it. Same 'issue' on my last MK4 so I don't think its the car.

Thanks for that, saved me calling the dealership. The first time I thought maybe I'd forgotten to lock the car, the second time my wife was questioning my mental capacity 😂Just noticed app reporting car unlocked, did the data update and now showing locked.

My Cupra born has been updating for 24h! I don’t know what to do! The car is completely frozen, won’t unlock unless I use the manual key. Engine won’t start, Cupra wasn’t any help and said just to let it update but 24h?

One for @East Yorkshire Retrofits the experts. Battery charger just to keep it live if it still is, till first aid arrives. Think people have talked about disconnecting the information unit from the power source at the back... but if it's in the process not good, why the dealer said just leave it, but it will need enough power to keep going if the screen is still live. There was a similar incident where someone triggered an update, but not at home and got similarly stuck whilst it was doing it (on the thread). Slow 4g is going to add to it if 4g is weak.

Thanks over 40h in now and nothing has changed. Best I’ve got is I need to get the car lifted and brought to the dealer which is going to be costly and nothing can be done until Tuesday. All garages have advised not to boost the battery as this is risked in EVs

Think you'll find trickle is allowed. Those charges people go on about. But if the infotainment screen is off... it won't be taking much so don't worry. I'm assuming it does have a normal battery other than the EV one. The EV one will be powerful enough if that's the only battery.

Your Seat warranty AA service will get it to a dealer for sure for free. Then there is always the VW engineer that are also free that come out. Their reputation is good for fixing stuff at home. May be more of a delay.

I'd put a phone call in for recovery at some stage and see what your options are. You might wish to opt for the VW engineers if you think they know more about it. Whether they recover, pass. But a dealer needs a time slot to work on it so you need to review the choices. VW engineers might know what to do. Hybrids and EVs seem to do this. Conk out.

sorry I missed you phoning back East Yorkshire Retrofits.
unfortunately my car is out of warranty it’s a born 2022 and I don’t have any breakdown cover. I’m hoping the Cupra garage will come up with a solution for it on Tuesday, wish I had got the breakdown cover now so I would get it crane lifted to the garage but seems like could be a big bill to covert for something like that. (Hoping Cupra will cover the costs considering it’s their update that has caused this 😭)

Well the annual service cost does include AA recovery from Cupra if it was an ICE car. Not sure what the Cupra service deals are and whether they include recovery. That will be on the website.

The Seat ones include European recovery as well so offer very good value for money. A little secret that may not be widely advertised. That includes access to those Vag / VW engineers as well as the AA mechanics.

It will be this link. They don't tell you what the offer is untill you look up your car similar to Seat:

Or you can buy it at a dealer. Well worth having I reckon. If like Seat the road side assistance is thrown in free each year if you book the service online although some dealers renew it if booked in by phone. Cupra could have always unbundled that cost. That you'll read on the link above once you enter your details. Suggest you enter your details and have a read. You might be able to take out the service cover and then get your free recovery. Like the old days of the AA. So website. Customer services. Dealer looking for a deal on it.

Sounds like ICAS 1/J533 failure. I take it the alarm didn't sound when you opened the door with the key blade?
