Space Saver Wheel

I have a 2017 2.0 TDI 190 4Drive. It came with just a thin piece of carpet and a round piece of foam in the boot when I bought it.

I ordered a spare wheel kit from the same place as you, Caffyns, for £340. The part number for the kit I ordered is ZGBBOM235SE.

It will arrive in a few separate boxes. You get a space saver wheel, jack/tools, foam surrounds and a new boot floor. There is absolutely no modifications required to fit it, just goes straight in and fits perfectly.

You lose a bit of boot height, but I prefer this as you have a flatter load area with the rear seats down.

Mine has already saved my bacon when I recently got a puncture.

I'd sort of decided that mine didn't use a bracket only the 2WD variable shelf one where the plane has to fit in is bolted and the need to dig around looking for the holes. The parts list hasn't got those bolts for the 4Drive but in for 2WD.

Reluctant to take my factory fitted boot apart to check, quite a bit to move out 🙄. Saying this there seem to be variations in the parts supplied between the model year and whether Cupra. Thus the need to supply the VIN to the people when ordering.

The flat plane is as you say is handy. No lifting up and down over a big lip, but then the 4Drive axle takes up space so in reality you don't loose that much space, just the width of the skinny and a bit.

Hi Bendy

Thanks for the heads up on the kit.
Sounds like our cars have the same boot configuration even though mine is a Cupra.
I have noticed though the kit part number is slightly different so some of the parts must be different?
Yours ZGBBOM235SE.
Mine ZGBBOM242SE.

It was supposed to arrive today by DHL but it looks like it is now coming tomorrow so I stayed of work for nothing!

Hopefully I wont ever need to use it like you have but at least I will have peace of mind just in case.

Will update with photos once it finally arrives.

My excuse for not digging about in the boot is sciatica have to be careful I don't trigger it off, however I did have a peak underneath today and yes the floor panel does just sit on the plastic mount form. My old Altea I took a traditional 32" cathode ray tube TV in the back on the platform. They are stronger than you think.

The other secret is where the locking nut goes. That's shown in Little John's picture in its own cubicle in the moulding. Bottom right. That's where your tyre place expects to find it. Those spare wheels have an expire date on them but I wouldn't worry about that. Only boards do. 😂

I had the variable boot floor in my Leon ST and it was really good, but I very rarely changed the height. It is slightly annoying that in the Tiguan, it is standard fit across all models.

As long as the wheel bolt fitment is the same across all Ateca models, I don't understand why there are different variations of the spare wheel. The Ateca body shell in the boot will be the same (apart from between 2wd and 4wd), the wheel hub / attaching point should be the same etc. On the Leon, there were 2 sizes of space saver you could get, depending on if you had 17" or 18" alloys.

I found my tyre flat on my driveway, so didn't actually drive on the space saver, just fitted it so I could take my wheel to the garage to get plugged. Still very handy to have though. I also like all the storage space in the foam inserts. I carry loads of spares in there (fuses, an extending wheel brace, electric tyre pump, water, high viz vest etc).

Hi all
So after staying of work yesterday for nothing my spare wheel kit arrived this morning.:)
Well the actual spare wheel arrived and nothing else!
I think DHL have left the other items at the depot as the delivery tracker says delivery part complete.
I will have to contact the supplier first thing Monday to find out what has gone wrong again.
I was also surprised to find the spare arrived in no packaging at all just delivery stickers stuck to it!

@Bendy
Did your spare wheel arrive packaged or with just delivery stickers on like mine?

My wheel came like that, with just a sticker on. I'm sure my wheel came separately aswell, and a few days later I got a box with all the other parts in and the boot floor. Give Caffyns a ring and ask, they were really helpful when I rang to ask which kit I needed.

Yeah I'm going to email them tomorrow so they pick it up first thing Monday.
You would think they would just send it all together although the DHL driver said the other parts had gone to another depot so maybe they did send it all out?
Will find out on Monday.

Hi Andy

I would have had it off you if I had not already ordered mine.

The rest of my kit followed a few days after the spare wheel was sent.( see attached)
Will post some pictures once I fit it this Friday in the car.

Hopefully it all fits in fine. Seems to be only the variable floor that needs the brackets and finding the holes.
Hi Tell

Looks like you remove the original carpet and slim piece of foam and bolt the wheel down.
Put the two foam inserts in either side, one which houses all the tools then you just sit the new floor on top.
We will find out on Friday.
Will post pictures plus the receipt which shows the individual parts.
It definitely pays to shop around as the price varies massively even between Seat main dealers for the same kit:unsure:
Think I was lucky as the price has now gone up where I bought mine from.
It was on sale when I bought it.

Good evening all

So today I fitted the kit and this is the procedure.

Remove the thin carpet and piece of circular foam.
Put the spare wheel in face down and bolt down using the supplied plastic bolt.
Put both foam pieces in either side of the wheel.
I put the towing bar eye and locking wheel nut in the space provided in the foam.
Put the new floor on top of the foam. It just sits on top.
It is probably not as strong as the original set up if you were to put something very heavy in the boot.
You also loose about 140MM of boot depth with the kit in place. (See attached photos.)

I have included the receipt which details each part in the kit ZGBBOM242SE for the Cupra Ateca no sound.
The kits are all priced differently depending where you buy from and by a lot!

Note: The adjustable wrench is mine which I have put in as the supplied one is quite short.

Hope this helps anyone requiring a space saver kit for their 2019 Cupra Ateca without Sound.

I have used the original thin carpet and placed this on top of the new floor like a cover.

Karl

Exactly the same as my kit by the looks of it. The new boot floor has a hinged opening bit on the left hand side, so if you need to access anything in the storage area where your extending wheel brace is, you don't need to lift the whole floor.

They are expensive, but are a perfect fit and finish and I wouldn't be without it.

Hi Bendy

Yeah sounds like they are the same although your kit part number was slightly different to mine.

Yours ZGBBOM235SE.
Mine ZGBBOM242SE.

Think the tools are the same and the wheel but the foam inserts, Boot lining and jack are different part numbers?
I will attach a photo of both parts in mine and your kit to see the difference.

Maybe Tell will know what the difference is between the Cupra Ateca and the Seat Ateca 4WD is?

Definitely feel better now I have the spare.
What is the correct tyre pressure for the spare18" wheel?

That's the interesting one of what the difference is if any. I wouldn't have thought of much between the pre FL of both and post FL. You could see that the FL ones could be different. You got four possibilities. Reckon it's before and after FL the difference not between standard Ateca and Cupra Ateca else they would be altering the body. Mind you somebody else might throw more light on it. As I said before those parts didn't exist for the first couple of years of the standard Ateca. If you didn't specify them from the factory you were stuck. People just got the wheel and stashed it in the boot. Untidy solution if they didn't order the factory option. Some resorted to their wood working skills.

In so far as cost effectiveness and hassle. If you work out putting the sealant in wrecks the tyre which it does and then if travelling you probably can't get hold of the fancy matching tyres so you'd either end up buying a different matching set or stuck without the car. With the skinny you can run on it till you get the tyre(s) you want in. As said I drove back from Luxembourg to London on a skinny since there was no way I could get the wheel changed on a Saturday night till Monday. Everything closes down on a Sunday in Luxembourg. Ferry was late afternoon so continued on my way. That damaged tyre had side wall damage with a big bulge. It's that I heard rumbling in an underground car park and looked 🙄.

Probably pays for itself on just one puncture since you have to buy one new wheel plus the sealant... or perhaps just over one puncture but you have the convenience of being able to get on with things.... albeit at 50mph.
