Speaker swap (midbass only?)

Hey guys,

Coming round to the time where I'm going to swap the OEM speakers for coaxial's, mainly because I'm trying to avoid the hassle of removing the door cards to put components in.

Has anyone just swapped the existing 16.5cm speakers for mid-bass units and kept the existing tweeters in place? Just wondering what this sounds like? Or will i get better sound from snipping the cables to the tweeters and running full-range from the lower door?

I've already got a replacement HU in.

I've got coaxials in and disabled the factory tweeters. I think there's way too much treble if you leave them connected.

At the end of the day it's all personal taste. It doesn't take long to enable/disable the tweeters. Don't snip the cable, just pull connector two out the adapter, then it's dead easy to connect them up again if you so desire

Ah yeah good idea. I guess my worry is that if i buy full-range and the imaging/quality isn't as good i'd have to then fork out for components/mid bass speakers as well.

Are you still running the OEM headunit with uprated speakers?

Yeah I've got a RNS315 with uprated speakers. Sound quality is definitely improved.

In my old leon I had a JVC KWAV60BT with the same vibe slick 6 coaxial speakers.

They provide more bass than the standard speakers, not enough for me though, I run an active sub too. The mids and highs are also to my liking.

Cool. Sounds good then. Did you put any dynamat or additional sound deadening in behind the speakers when you swapped them over too? I'm trying to work out what I could fit in behind the door cards (without taking them off).

Nope not done any of that. You can remove the material section of the door, that will give you reasonable access to the bottom if you wanted to sound proof it

Cool. I think I'll just swap the fronts and backs for coaxials now then. Am about to order some of these: http://www.morelhifi.com/car-audio/tempo/tempo-coax-2 as they get great write-ups.

So pretty much changed my mind again after talking to a local installer. Have got a really good deal on a second hand Audison 5 channel amp and going to search out some decent component kits. He's done a couple of Leon's before and has experience with the dreaded door cards.

At the moment thinking decent components up front, leaving the rears standard (maybe swapping just the 6.5's) and putting a decent sub in the boot.

This car/audio habit is an expensive one

Door cards are actually pretty easy if you just take your time. Had a local installer do mine and they made a total mess of my doors. Only found out when I stripped the door down because the windows were rattling. They hadn't put any sound deadening in which they charged me for, hadn't glued the cross overs in and hadn't put the door back together properly !
