Hey guys,

Father in law has just been in touch with his car in limp mode. Won't go past 3000rpm. He's had the RAC out and, they've diagnosed it as a Speed Sensor. Any idea on the location and, if its a chew on to replace.

G28 engine speed sensor. Normally on the front of the engine above the sump in the block near the gearbox/flywheel. Don't round off the bolt holding it on and they can be quite tight coming out so be careful.

Anyone know the bolt sizes? May have to have a go at this at the weekend? Read some posts that starter motor removal is required? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not trying to suggest anyone is wrong, but, there does seem to have been a few postings on VAG forums about "speed sensors" - from what I've read, it is the car road speed sensor, all these drive by wire cars will not rev above 3000RPM if the car is stationary, that is intentional. I'd hope in most cases this would show up as a U/S speedometer, but it seems in some cases, speedometer is okay but the signal is not arriving at the engine ECU - so in these cases hopefully a wiring issue or worst case an engine ECU failure.

If what I've written turns out to be correct, and the speedometer is U/S ie not reading true car speed, then that sensor should be on the gearbox.
