I wonder if anybody can help me, on the ibiza we are having a strange problem and that is int. when starting the clock and trip will reset.
I have tryed a number of things so far and no joy, these are:~

Earth points near battery (cleaned and refitted)
relay 109 (replaced)
clock set (swapped)
battery (swapped)

Car starts ok and to be honest it normaly only does this first thing in the morning when it is cold outside, I have taken volage readings and I seem to have a 1 volt drop from the reading at the battery to a reading at the cig socket, so I trying running new cables strieght from the battery to the cig socket but again still no joy, I am now running out of ideas so can anybody offer and help?
many thanks as always.

you need to scan with vag scanner for faults sounds like a earth fault to me

i had the same problem with mine when i 1st bought it. it had about 18k on the clocks and every journey i made, the clock would go to 00.00 and the trip would zero. took it back as it was still in warranty, told them the problem and they said the clocks are faulty. the`ve had 2/3 back like this so they relaced the whole thing. the only down side was that the car now had no milage and they couldnt put 18k to make it genuine. so they put a record in the service book and stamped it. you will probably have to find another set if clocks from an identical car.

cheers but the problem is that I have fitted another set and it still does it?

is there a chance that they could be dodgy aswell. its just that i clearly remember seat saying to me at the time that there couldnt be any other problem that will make the clocks do what they were doing. its inside the clocks which is the problem.

no they are ok because they have come out of the vario, the jobs of having two cars the same i can swap bits :)

check wiring just under battery just on the bend as it goes down to the box

as stated in the first post, I have removed, cleaned and refitted that earth, and tbh it looked ok, this is really getting to me now :(

not the earth check the loom just under the battery check all the wiring in it just on the bend ok

cheers, ok I have taken the battery out and checked, all is fine there.

have you split the conduit and checked the wiring all way from ecu down to front of box most of the time the wire goes just on the bend ok

ok I have stripped all the connectors in the engine bay today, cleaned and refitted. I think I have found the problem, I noticed that the plastic cap on the starter pos has melted and the connectors looked poor, so I cleaned and replaced the nut that holds them on (as that was well pitted) and touch wood all seems fine. She starts better and even on full glow battery drops only down to 11.5v where as before in the car it when to 10.3v.
I will just have to see what it does in the next couple of cold starts but fingers crossed.

let me know how you get on ok

not sure if it helps or at all relevant mind but mine does the very same thing

not intermittent or as fault but when i turn my lights on ( hid fitted) and it seems a regular one when those light conversions are fitted too

i have adapted the earths and its the same so may rule that out but have heard a relay fitted to the positive circuit is the cure when hid's are concerned

all i can deduce is that in both cases as it's high drain that it's a positive supply problem to the speedo at times of high current draw

i would check the main power supply to the speedo and maybe re-route to the battery on a switch so at least the theory could be tested when starting ?

I can see what you mean, your HIDs would give you a big voltage drop so a relay off the battery would help with that, I think mine is sorted now as I have unpluged the coolant sensor (this turns the glow plugs on for a good 30 secs plus) and my voltage drop is alot better, I have done a lot of reading up on this and apparently if the clocks let less than 10.8 then they can reset as they have a 10v voltage reg fitted inside and there is a 0.8v drop across this, also my clocks used to disapear when cranking and come back ok once started where as the Vario does not, now I have done all of this on the Ibiza they don't do it now. So fingers crossed :)
