Stalling from standstill

Having been driving for the last 50 years, I think I know how to recover from a stall when attempting to move forward when the car is wrongly in 2nd or 3rd, rather than 1st gear, with a rapid gear change and pedal play.

Having owned my first SEAT, an Ateca, for the last year, I have noticed problems when encountering such a situation. The car does not respond in the way I have been used to, and the engine effectively dies for a couple of seconds. All well and good when in a quiet road, but potentially serious when trying to pull out into traffic, especially when turning right from a side road.

Aside from comments about ‘it’s your fault for putting it in the wrong gear’ – I’m sure we’ve all done it from time to time – has anyone else noticed this, and have any insight into the cause?

Engine dying sounds like start / stop. I've driven a DSG for 20 years so I don't know what a manual is. Start / stop is the baine of modern cars although some people it doesn't worry them. Basically once the engine is warmed up when stationary it will stop the engine. For fast get away a stopped engine isn't helpfull. You can manually turn start stop off but you have to remember to do that each time you start the car. Chances of doing that are remote unless you are like an airline pilot with a check list. So the next busy roundabout / turn right across traffic, it gets you a couple of miles up the road.

You can code is out with the voltage method. Probably still applies to the latest Atecas. MQB Evo platform, Formentor etc they have stopped you doing that. The other preferred solution is a memory switch. It replaces what you have. It remembers how you last set it, which is what you want. Coding it out does mean you have to code it back in at service else you run the risk of the dealer telling you start stop has an issue.

Another strategy apparently is to twitch the steering wheel which is suppose to restart the engine so at those turns you start twitching the wheel. Still when we are all on EVs that will be the death of start stop.
