standard for mapped ECU

Ie got a friend who is selling his 01 LC which is mapped, i was thinking of swapping the ECU's so i got the mapped one instead of the standard one. Can i just swap em and plug em back in or are they specifically coded for individual engines?? I know with most cars you can just simply swap them.... but we all know how awkward VAG are.....

Must be the same engine code on both cars for any chance of a match.

The ECU must be registered with the immobiliser or the car won't start. Dealers use the VAG fault reader or systems tester to do this. VAG-com may be able to do this as well - best ask in the VAG-com section.
