Stealth Ipod install!

paradigm

I hate the orange game!
Decided last week that I wanted a handsfree kit, and an IPOD in the car, so got me a pioneer DEH-P55BT (bluetooth headunit), a pioneer CD-IB100 ipod controller for IP-bus, and a lot of patience dismantling the dashboard!

Wired the microphone for the handsfree on the drivers sunvisor (running behind the steering column, then up behind the a-pillar covering, and wired the ipod into the space in the drawer below the climate control (where the ashtray should be - now removed).

The CD-IB100 is velcro'd between the CD changer, and the "pod" in the glovebox, but behind the glovebox, so not visible from the cabin at all.

Anyway, here are the pics:

That looks great, but what's it like to use? Is the ipod interface okay and how much info is displayed on the head unit when the ipod is on?

Quality install m8 :coolthumb

I used to have mine the same but operating the iPod upside down started to get on my nerves. (can only skip tracks with my Kenwood H/U) [:@]

So once i'd installed my armrest, I ran the dock cable through the centre console and up into the armrest. Still have to open the armrest to select playlists etc... but at least now I can read what's on the screen. :D

There's always one of THESE

Harman/Kardon Drive+Play - I have the iPod tucked out of the way but I still have a clear, backlit display which shows me what's going on and a BMW iDrive-stylee controller which mimics the iPod's clickwheel.

The controller is fixed to a Belkin TuneDok which suits my car as it has cupholders in the centre console, but the kit comes with screws and adhesive pads to allow you to site the controller and display anywhere you like.

(The 12V power lead in the pic is from a TomTom unit).

What single din surround have you got there mate? Also, is that the standard surround for the Pioneer head unit as it looks a lot more flush than my DEH 7600?

Nice job on the install

To all the questions:

1) My Headunit can control the ipod fully through its own controls, so I dont need to be able to see the ipod, or even touch it to control it.

2) The fascia adapter is the caraudiodirect one

3) The pioneer surround is the one that came with the HU, however its not attached to the stereo, its epoxied direct to the fascia adapter, to give it that more "flush" look.

Thomohawk: I had thought about putting it in the arm-rest, however the ipod wouldnt stay still in there, and would rattle around. Not something I wanted to be honest.

Yeah, it moves around slightly (can feel it knocking on the side every now and again), but because the inside of my armrest is lined with felt it makes no noise at least.

in thinking of buying one of these how is the navigation for mp3`s etc ?

red would match the interior of the leon well but thinking is it worth upgrading to the DEH-P75BT as the front is motorised and a better display shame it is blue through

Glad you went for the 55BT and not the 75. My mate went for the 75BT in his A3, and the MP3 navigation is a lot slower on his, not to mention the fact that the blue lights look so gash when the rest of the illumination in the car is red.

Phone quality is excellent, the echo cancellation seems to work a treat (or so people on the other end say), having my entire phonebook copied to the HU means I can dial without needing my phone to even be reachable, it also means I can see who is calling me.

MP3 navigation, whilst better than any other HU with ipod interface I have used, it is still a LOT easier to navigate playlists than it is albums (playlist navigation using up/down, track skip with left/right. To change albums requires going into "functions" and then scrolling down through your albums).

Sound quality is also superb on the standard speakers, far better than the AURA system that was there from the factory.

its a brilliant value unit when you take into account its a phone hands free system, and has i-pod capabilities. youve just made my mind up on that one:)
