Steering Angle Sensor

Some time ago my stering rack wsa replace, my old one just went randomly.

So got that replaced for £550.

Since that was replaced the fault light on the dash illuminated, and i have now been told my Inde-Tech and MK Seat I need a new Steering angle Sensor. Inde-Tech want £175 for the job, roughly the same as Seat.

My question is, should the garage that did the steering rack have replaced the sensor as part of the job? And is there any way to source the part for less and just get Inde tech to fit it?

Just want the car fixed, its pissing me off, and the steering just randomly gets very heavy round the odd corner, its making journeys, although more exciting, a lot more dangerous.

Any advice? Is my only option to fork out £175 for a sensor and just get it done??

no sensor is a seperate component to the rack but sits in it they usually go due to water ingress and sometimes be fixed by simply removing and drying and cleaning it the applying a sealing agent on before refitting.......

I also had my steering rack replaced

mine was done under warranty due to a knock when wiggling the steering wheel

I asked them how much the bill was and they said it was over 600 quid

my power steering light has never come on (touches wood)

Also, does anyone know if £175 for the job is about right?

I am definately going to take the car to Inde-Tech than MKSEAT, who are APPAULING. They just tried to charge me £50 for a quote?! Obviously I told them I'm not paying for it.

I aint to sure about different models but my 04 FR has a ''normal'' power steering rack but with an electric pump. I work for a firm who re-con and sell new steering racks, pumps, drive shafts, c.v joints, propshafts c.v boots e.t.c..
must electic pumps are made by TRW. but for one reason or another the electric pumps get super seeded every now and again. some of the super seeded iteam don't have some of the plug that the old one does, this then brings a light on on the dash.
If you go to the dealer for a new pump they will charge you around £600 for a new pump. and when the light comes on they will turn it off!
But if you buy a pump from another place like us the pump will be the very same part from the very same place for around £225!
but try and get the dealer to turn your light off is impossable! they turn around and say you have fitted an after market part which is not compatable to they program. even tho tho part numbers are the same!

also there is no eletrical sensers that come with a new or re-con rack.
the old ones must be used.
the senser is at the top ''pinion'' part of the rack. but inside the workings of the rack there is two very fine 5 spoke rings. these can get damaged when re-coning a rack. I think but I am not 100% if you remove the senser you can see the side of the rings. in other words it would be easy for some thing to damage the rings when fitting the rack.
I hope this helps Richie

Thanks for the reply's. Spoke to Inde Tech, and the guy at the counter told me it would be better for me to source the part my self, and they will charge me £80 to fit it.

How do I get a part number for a Steering Angle Sensor? Im going to try vagparts and anywhere else i can source the part now. Any recomendations?

Be carefull as the Fabia uses an older type sensor with a loom built into it.

IIRC all the Ibizas have the latter type sensor which has a seperate loom, but i'm not 100% on it.

It is the same system however, a hydraulic system run by an electric pump. The sensor just tells the control unit in the electric pump when you are moving the steering wheel so it can supply assistance.

Hmmm.....that makes it more complicated. Thanks for the info, dont know what to do now?!

Ive been told it needs a new sensor, went to inde tech to book it in, the guy said source the part yourself. Ill phone Seat up tomorrow, and get the part number of them, and compare it to the listing.

I should imagine Indetech would only be getting the part from MK SEAT anyhow unless they could cross reference it with VW and get it from Wayside.

Either way Indetech know what they are doing (I've worked with a few of the chaps there in the past).

did you have to get the steering angle sensor calibrated or do you just replace it.
