If it makes any difference, when driving I can hear a quiet 'winding' noise as the wheel turns, like a constant humming as the wheel turns.

Well Lee I just pray I find out what's going on this weekend. I have a theory, that because I didn't get it tracking aligned after I repaired it, the wheels were slightly off line, and so now one of them has been forced to move towards the strut after some driving?I also have a new hub to fit so that the ABS ring works again
You should be able to tell easily, put the steering on full lock to expose the "inner" wall of the tyre and there should be a definite line around the wall of the tyre.
I'm quite certain I agree with you about the tyre rubbing, but I wanna find out what's causing it
If it was ok for ages then all of a sudden I'd be putting it down to won bearing/bush....good hunting
Main one is the wheel bearing, but I'm sure you would have heard it before now, they generally get a "drumming" noise when going around bends.
It could be that your power steering pump has stopped working, this would give additional resistance to the acceleration/deceleration of your car.
Remember when you turn your wheels the strutt moves aswell so shouldn't clash.
As said above, check the inside of the tyre, if it is rubbing then this needs chanced ASAP

How would failed power steering cause the wheel to move inwards? The power steering is still working anyway dude as it's not THAT hard. I am quite sure it feels hardER though because the wheel is rubbing on the strut. Plus there are no fault codes using VAG COM...
It wuldn't cause the wheel to move inwards but a buckles hub, colapsed bearing, worn wishbone bushes and bent wishbone would though
At least I've got a definitive list of things to check now Thing is I only recently fitted a new hub, along with a new wishbone :S

Maybe the bushes themselves have worn though... as they don't get replaced with a new wishbone do they. I don't recall doing them
If your wishbone needed replaced and they didn't replace the bushes i would be very very worried about the state they have left your car in
Worried about what in particular? Do you mean, worried that the bushes now need replacing asap?
My mistake, I've just done some research on the wishbone I bought and it included new bushes already in the wishbone.
