My 2002 LCR has developed a very strange issue. Previously the cars temperature reading from the dashboard dial would be at 90. However recently it will be at 90 and then suddenly drop to approx 80 and then go back to 90. It is most noticeably at motorway speeds.

From the climate control panel and looking at option 51 I can see that the reading is 90. I have also checked the coolant level and confirmed that the engine fans do cut in.

Can anyone help?

Thanks, from what I remember it is dropping when the car is moving but sometimes it will go back to 90, even when the car is moving. However its aleays at 90 when the car is still.

Would you know how come the climate control panel option 51 still show 90 even though the dail is slowing below 90?

Also where is the thermostat and do you how much it would cost to replace? Could I simply clean the old part?

Thanks all, currently it does'nt always do this with the temp dial but I think I need to get a quote. Does everyone use the OEM Seat Part or recommend another?

Do you think it could be anything else wrong with the car? Is it a common part to go wrong? My car has only done 50K?

Do you think I should also replace the Coolant Sensor Replacement with the green 059 919 501A? Does anyone have the part number for the Thermostat and coolant sensor and the plastic orange oil stick which typically breaks if you change the themostat yourselve?

Again can anyone give me a hand changing the part I am in Slough but I will be in Leicester next weekend 11th September?

had this exact issue on a leon cupra, - new thermostat and all sorted. better mpg too as it gets to temp much quicker than before.

To replace the thermostat its a little tricky as access is tight, some say remove the inlet manifold, - i did it without, instead undoing the plastic 'tray' that sits in front of the inlet manifold, unbolting and moving the metal tray out of the way, - the orange dipstick receptor thingy slots into this metal tray so some moving of this is required.
i would say if you are careful you should be ok, if you are a bit heavy handed and not careful i can see how someone could break it.
Then you can just about get to the thermostat, which is held in place with two bolts, (one at top, one bottom)
You will need a long entension and flexi joint on your ratchet as access is not easy.
One thing id say is you really dont want to drop the bolts down inside there, a real PITA you may never find it again.. :wjhistle:
So when losening be careful, - probably best to use hands for last bit of removal rather than have it fall out of end of your ratchet.

If you have some strongly magnetised tools then perhaps this would be good, but when refitting the bolts it wont be easy so take action to prevent the bolts being dropped. (eg use some tape to hold bolt into the ratchet until the bolts are in place.

Take your time. :)

I need help, I read the guide on http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?p=16925102 for the themostat replacement. I can't even remove the plastic cover by the oil dip stick. If seems like the screws head have shed off? Does any know if the themostat is in the same place on the LCR as othe Seats? Do you know if the part number is the same for all petrol engines?

the LCR location will be the same as other 1.8t engines.

The black plactic tray thing.. its held with two plastic screws, this plastic being quite soft and its easy to round off these to difficult to remove.
Im not sure they need to be unscrewed but rather simply turned through 90degress?

im going to go look now!
back asap

ok so on the LC there are 3 screws, two along front and one up side between engine and battery.
On the LCR there are just two along front due to inlet manifold being the other way around.
I did the change on a LC and the screws just turn through 90 degress to release, (same as for engine cover).
On my LCR it would appear mine have the same issue as yours, looks like someone has undone these or tried to and the plastic has all but gone. looks like metal underneath the head, so perhaps some sort of reverse thread tool could do it, it usually required no effort at all.
confirmed, if i ever need to remove these ill have to drill into it and use reverse thread remover.

Also confirmed that is all as per that thread you linked to. Exactly the same.
Looking at the guide i think i didnt remove the dipstick pipe, actually i think i tried and it felt like it was potentially brittle so i left it in place.. - maybe why i stuggled a bit for access.

I had this but mine would drop to Zero than back to 90

its the temperature coolent sensor they are black, but should be replaced with the uprated green version

very cheap £1 odd

well if your is a 210 version and is registered earlier than 2003 i think it will prob have the black temp sensor you can get the sensor from any vag company vw, seat, skoda etc, dead easy to fit just screws into place, make sure you change it when the engine is stone called otherwise you will loose coolent
