hey guys and gals,

new problem on my car 1.4 petrol, its developing a habit of stuttering/ shuddering when cold or i notice it on long journeys. Its intermittant sometimes it fine (oh maybe i dont notice it as the car normally crashes about on its springs anyways). One night it was really badly around 2 - 3k RPM and i manage to irritate it enough for the check engine light to flash a couple of times. VAG-COM shows intermittant misfire on cylinder 1

any thoughs, like i said its intermittant and i've not had the check engine light flash again probably because its not stuttering as bad as it did that one night. i've already had my spark plugs changed.

It will be the coil pack mate. They are covered by a 5 year warranty according to some so you might be able to get one free. Otheresie they are about £30 and easy to change.

Check the fuel system for water contamination, the fuel filter would be the best place to look.
I had a similar problem on a previous car, if not then the coil packs could be at fault.
If it is then move the known faulty coil pack to another cylinder and see if VAG-COM follows the problem.

You need a new coil pack on cylinder no 1 mate. If the car is under 5 years old you can get one fitted for free from seat as it is a recognised common fault and they therefore have an extended warrenty to 5 years rather than 3 on the coil packs.

Let us know how you get on.
