Yeah, newer sump plugs are plastic now. They are supposed to work quite well, but somehow I prefer metal.

Well that means no more alloy sump thread stripping if the sump base on cars fitted with plastic drain plugs are alloy and not just a flattish sheet of steel - but also leads to other issues - I hope they are not black as most places do not accept black plastics for recycling!

You will actually find the main dealer probably wont ever drain the oil from the sump in 2020, they will use a pump to pump out the old oil for speed.

Now that makes things a bit slightly worse as anyone that has removed a plastic bolt that has been in situ for many many years will know, the head will jut snap off as the threaded section has "flowed" slightly over time as plastics are not very stable.
I agree that maybe the oil will get vac'd out for the usual convenience and mainly H&S reasons, but the drain plug will then get removed to drop out the oil that remains, a oil service bill would prove/disprove that theory in as much as you would get billed for a plug.
My wife has a 2015 Polo 1.2TSI and the additional text on the oil service worksheet does point out that vac removal of oil is not to be used - or words to that effect. This vac/don't vac thing seems to be changing with time I think.

Mines metal (2011). I've also got a collection of sump plugs on the window sill at home cause for the £1.25 I change it every time I change the oil (twice a year).
I'll go check mine at the weekend, going to be ordering new plugs for my services. Off topic, have you ever tried to take your downpipe off?

Garage did mine for me, took them about 20 minutes and they didn't seem particularly stressed about it. But not done one myself.

This is the correct one. It's what I ordered when I did the service on mine.

The internet is very 50/50 on it. Some people saying it easy, others would not reccomend doing it on the drive? Just want to make the precat fall out. Cars in the garage tomorrow I'll ask as he is a VW specialist.

My 2014 has a plastic sump and thankfully a plastic plug (imagine wrench monkeys overtightening a metal one in the plastic sump - ugh).
The plug looks just like the ebay one.
They come out easily and go back likewise.
Not much clearance under the car, though! Worrying with speed bumps.

From the ebay link, it looks like this plastic plug has been well thought out as the thread is extremely coarse and rounded in profile, so not an issue if left in for a long time or re-used, though no sensible DIYer would consider reusing a plastic sump drain plug.
