If you've not removed your throttle body at any point, then it probably won't need doing. If you have access to VAGCOM, give it a go, but don't pay to have it done.

It is possible, but the throttle body either runs wrongly (so the car doesn't even start) or it's ok. I don't think it can run badly enough to generate a knock sensor fault.

For a knock sensor fault, I'd look at plugs and coilpacks.
