TDi PD Tuning Boxes?

brightsideteeem

I'm not like you guys...
Im tempted by one ive found on flea-bay. Im just wondering though if the 'PD' is a brand name or is it just meant for PDi engines?

it has a list of cars it works on and mine seems to be in it but dont want to get my finges burnt as it will be a first time buy on ebay..
any help much appreciated.

Dont bother with them they are very crude mess up the computer redaings and your engine. Get a remap, make it a mild one if your car has done a bit of mileage.

dragon digital tuning boxes are alright if you can find a s/h one :) they do increase power and ive been able to put my foot down below 2000rpm without clutch fail. would like to get Dyno results to see before and after though. They are very lumpy though, you can feel it kick in and out, if that doesnt bother you there good, otherwise a remap for sure!

You could make one using a 10p resistor from Maplin and a couple of OEM plugs from the dealer.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the digital tuning boxes, they work and work well.

Short-term maybe!

If you plan on selling the car after a year then get a tuning box, if you plan on keeping the engine and want to keep it in good condition then the digi box's arnt worth spitting on.

Tuning box's alters injection only.

A good software upgrade will alter various maps for injection in relation to engine load and rpm, injection timing, torque limiters, boost in relation to temp, load, rpm and more....

We recently tuned a BMW 123d for a customer who had a £500 tuning box (it quoted a 65bhp increase) but wanted a remap. The results were:

Stock = 203bhp 289lbs/ft
Tuning box = 222bhp 320lbs/ft
P-Torque remap = 253bhp and 360lbs/ft

Regardless of peak figures, tuning boxes will not hold power throughout the rev range like a remap. They spike, then tail off :thumbd:

Not disagreeing a map will be vastly superior - I have/had one myself.

A tuning box is just another solution which meay be cheaper. a remap is smoother if done right, has more power all the way through, probably smokes less if at all.

Just saying for some purposes if the price is right it is worth considering. If you're gonna spend 500 quid on a tuning box, IMHO that is a massive mistake. If it is 100ish quid, perhaps worth it.

A generic map will still be better :) a custom map better still

I would never spend more than £150 on a digital tuning box.

They do work, definiate power increase, however they can make the engine a little lumpy.

No Comparison between a Proper remap from the proffesionals, compared against a Tuning Box!

thanks guys, im gonna give the box a go as im getting rid next nov. 1M cupra next, proper money to be spent then haha

also: i called into a place that does remaps, urban racing, and they told me something interesting. They told me that a lot of 'remappers' use preset codes that are 'locked' to your ecu. They said that then if ever anything goes wrong you cant plug into diagnostics and reset fault codes.

He mentioned that Revo did it? And that they were in court in america over something to do with that matter? Is ANY of this true? o_O

Not sure about Revo (They do, do some wierd stuff with their remaps), but most others remap from good tuners will not effect diagnostics equipment or fault code resetting.

Just to answer the above query...

We don't lock out any diagnostic tools, we are a registered 5052 user and it works perfectly on all our cars! Not ever had any court dealings regarding locking people out of ECUs.
Nothing 'weird' is done to the ECU either, other than our security/encryption and this doesn't prevent anyone overwriting the software or using diagnostic equipment.

I have not heard of a remap preventing normal diagnostics, on any PD (or other) based VAG car.

I've had a tuning box and I've had multiple maps by multiple vendors. The box was cheap(er) at the time, it worked but yeah slightly more smoke in some conditions.

The maps were good in their own way, and as I went the hybrid route of course it was needed :D
