Just had my 60k service done today (warranty is about to run out :( ). I have been advised by my dealer that my timing belt is due for renewal all for £270?????, how come a belt which is usually about £20 turns into so much money? any explanations, is it something I could attempt myself, I have changed a few on my older petrol cars but never a diesel.

they usually change the tensioner too which is a few quid as well as the belt , then its just labour , my dealer charges near 50quid an hour , why not try the likes of jabba , amd or jbs to do it , as u say u have next to no warranty anyway , and under block exemption u dont need to use a dealer 4 any work ,

According to the skoda forum its £151 incl for the Fabia Vrs timing belt - I know where I'm going when its due. Look at this site http://www.fabia-vrs.com/downloads.htm

the full kit for my mk3 TDi was about 80 quid. which included belt pulleys and tensioner

not an easy job either. plus if it goes wrong !!

Which would seem about right with the labour of 1.6hours. Do you think it maybe worth a visit to Skoda, these look fairly correct then in the link provided.

Labour time for the MK4 Ibiza is around 3-3.5 hours for the belt and tensioner.

And i'm pretty sure the ASZ 130 bhp PD engine is 80,000 miles, it is in the Fabia.

Have done a number of timing belts myself in the past, but was too busy with other things when I hit 60K in the Leon.

Dealer wanted £260inc VAT. They were offering a free courtesy car for the day though.

Took it to my Porsche independant specialist (who I've used for bits on the S2) and he did timing belt & tensioner for £140 inc VAT.

Dealership price is high 'cos dealership labour rates are high.

From experience - timing belts are getting trickier on newer cars than they were in the past. More to take off. Less space to work in. More specialist tools required. Almost as if they were trying to make it a PITA

So why is there a big difference between the VRs and the Mk4 in manhours for the same engine, or is the info on our fellow VAG site incorrect?

There isnt a difference in the job. Or the labour times quoted by both manufactuers as far as I know (have done both at thier respective dealerships).

It could be 60k on SEAT and 80k on Skoda, maybe a slightly different belt.

Strictly speaking should also replace the bolts on the engine mounting.

always make sure they do replace thoes bolts... it was a shoddy job on my golf at 90K miles that caused them to pop put and need a new cylinder head and all that fun stuff on my golf at 111K miles. bass turds i say as the repair cost £850 same dammage as a cam belt snapping.

Mine was replaced but my mate didn't change the bolts as they were still ok. he did change the ribbed belt, tensioner and water pump. Still to get the bill.
