Hello all just a quick question or detailed one if anybody has the time to answer but I'm just wondering on some upgrades for my "huge" powered (90bhp) tdi? My plans are upgrade turbo to vnt17 and get a set of .216 nozzles with a remap. Obviously going along with some supporting mods i.e. Fmic, I've got pd150 intake manifold to go on along with a pd150 aluminium intake pipe, 80mm maf, any suggestions welcome

To be honest those listed upgrades are a great start to improving on the stock 90bhp and should expect around 150bhp with a decent remap.
I used to own a 90bhp AHU engined mk3 Golf estate and did all of those you mentioned and the difference was pretty dramatic.

Actually I've just realised you're going with the PD150 turbo as well, id expect at least 180bhp then.

People will say just buy the fr version but it's not the same and I'm not after big power just something to bang a smile on my face, what clutch would you go for?

Plus would anyone upgrades any internals or would they with stand? Any point in uprated head bolts?

I'd also say go with the ARL engine FR as well but then that's what u currently drive haha

TBF I do actually prefer the older VE (non Pumpe Duse) engines in some ways as they were a bit cheaper and easier to work on.
Injector nozzle swaps didn't involve a second mortgage either!

A nice robust and easy to work on engine what more do you want plus the car doesn't owe me anything so I'd rather so all this now than do it on an expensive car but just how robust is the engine

I can't remember what the standard clutch is rated to at the moment but if its healthy and you're running sub 200bhp it should be fine anyway.
This said once you remap a PD150 turbo you'll be very near to this and will certainly show up any weaknesses in the clutch and flywheel.

Headbolts are a good call actually as the 150 ARL has them as standard and even when people push the 130 ASZ with bigger turbos and remaps it's quite common to hear of engines suffering 'head lift'.
Id imagine the 90bhp variant is going to be easily as susceptible to this issue.

Ok I may have a search around for some head bolts then wouldn't hurt to do it either way and clutch I'll leave I think till it shows any sign of wear any recommendations for when I need one? Would a lightened flywheel be of any use?

Everyone has their own opinions on different clutches and flywheels but personally once the time arises id steer well clear of solid flywheels, especially lightened ones on a daily driven diesel.
It makes them incredibly noisy and rattly, I dread to think how bad it'd be on an already agricultural ALH engine!

Thank you for the input you've been a great help, do you have any idea where I can source a gt1749v (vnt17) from without paying through the roof and a set of genuine Bosch nozzles? I've been looking for a fair while now with no success and I've sort of pushed it back a bit now

Have you done those upgrades already? how many bhp its now on if yes? how much u spent? is it not cheaper just sell 90bhp and buy stock FR?( safer than modding 90bhp engine to limits)

Like I said it's different I could sell it and buy an fr but it's a little more interesting to do and learn and the alh engine is a little easier to work on and I haven't done them yet got some other stuff on so it's been out in the back burner for now

The alh is a lovely engine to work on without the PD additions.

It is an awkward call but by the time you have done all those mods your pocket will be lighter by over a grand (without the clutch) and even though it will have the raw power the rest of the car will be lagging behind.

To start, that extra power will put load on the mounts (bet they are the old originals) and will the brakes be up to it? There's no point going if you can't stop.

Would that money be better spent on grabbing something already done to have and work with that power?

I have the 110 and only got that remapped and that was a real nice drive.

I have brakes from 2.3l Toledo to go on and I had the car given to me so it doesn't owe me anything so thought I'd have a mess around with it

The V5 brakes front and rear should be sufficient with decent pads as they pump out 170bhp as standard anyhow.
