Temp Gauge Dropping?!

I've noticed that my temperature gauge has started to drop low recently. I fitted a TIP on Saturday and it seems to have started since then but I'm sure this has nothing to do with it just coincidence.

It seems to happen only when going downhill and the temperature drops from 90 to around 75-80. The car has always kept water temperature at a steady 90 and in the 6 years I've had the car I've never noticed this before.

Anyone got any ideas what this could be? A temp sender fault seems most likely but just strange it only does it going down hill.

Thermostat would be first port of all, cheap from dealer too. I've changed circa 5 of these in past year. Golf 1.8T, Golf 2.0, Audi A3 1.8T and 2 Leon's.

Search for thermostat 1.8t loads will come up. Pretty easy, just a tight area to get to.

Would it also be the thermostat if the gauge is taking a long time (8-10 miles) to get up to 90?

Also to op, if it isnt the thermostat it might be the temp sensor, i had the same problems as you last year so changed the temp sensor and it solved the problem.

Thanks for the replies.

I was looking last week at the thermostat that Awesome do and the fan switch to match. Maybe time to get these. I'll also get the coolant temp sensor too. Anyone got the part number handy?

Yeah I know what you're saying but I was thinking of going stage 2 soon and with the engine going on for 106k now I thought the extra cooling might just help it. If not I'll just get standard.

I don't think it cools it more. It just starts the cooling sooner. Kicks the fans in earlier so it doesn't get too hot to start with.

A 180 degree F thermostat (standard is 195F) is a must to additionally bring down engine temperature. This is the perfect part to with our low temperature fan switch, all designed to prolong engine life and smooth operation on hot days
15° is cooler.
An engine is designed to run at 90° don't be running it at 83° (ish)

Ok so I'll go for standard. Any idea how much that are at stealers? Also I see from looking at guides that I'll need to top up the coolant. Mine looks pink and I'm guessing it's OEM stuff. Never been changed to my knowledge. Would it be best to get coolant from stealers too?
