5 years service out of 3 x AAA batteries isn't that bad in the grand scheme of things.

Does it lose all coding & adaptation values if & when batteries are depleted completely?

Hope it keeps them in an EPROM or something like that!

I got concerned about that because we might have changed some of the Telematics adaptation entries while activating the navigation, if I remember correctly. And if ODIS needs to reset them all to factory settings, they would be overwritten and that means I would have to find someone again who has the means to get SFD2 tokens and it might not be possible ever again.

Anyway, the car is only 1,5 years old and I guess I have 3,5 or so years before starting to worry about this, but having the right information in advance is always good.

Yes it feels like one of those ceiling wired in fire alarms where you unclipped, clip a replacement in and dispose of the old one carefully since they have radioactive parts in them. Your telematics box doesn't.

Smoke detector up on the ladder 🪜, the telematics box down at the dealers since it buried in the car. Not sure whether obdeleven would pick up that error after battery replacement and clear it whilst ODIS does.

The smoke detector battery manages 10 years atleast... you get an expiry date on them. You have to replace after the allotted date.... I know about this one since I found after moving into the house the kitchen one set them all off (low conventional battery), whilst inspection of the hall ones, one was out of date (the fancy type with a sealed battery). Changed both plus the kitchen one. I'm told in Scotland it's illegal to fit conventional battery ones in new builds now. May be true in the UK now. These are the wired ones where the whole lot go off together when triggered. All have to be sealed unit.


Fun.


So probably now some of those cars reported with that telematics warning are low battery not the previous owner selling on with the other widely known fault which ran from 2020 for a couple of years.

It's a backup battery that doesn't power the unit, it only serves to keep the unit in working order should the 12v supply from the main battery be interrupted.

They don't lose any info when the battery is flat. Once the battery has been replaced, the module adaption values need resetting.

Once the unit is accessed, it's a really simple job to change the battery.
 
In the German forum, a lot of OCU backup batteries are currently "dying up." They last about 5 years on average. The original VW batteries are Not cheap. But there are aftermarket solutions.

It is not clear to us mortals what this "reset" action entails. Does it have to be done online only via ODIS so it can pull original configuration of the control unit from VAG servers? Or is it just an initialisation thing that is done offline, maybe even using some reset function under basic settings in OBD11?

What i wanted to know whether it was an obd11 clear errors rather than ODIS.
 
I've only ever used ODIS to carry out the process. It basically tells the OCU that the internal battery has been replaced.

I would imagine that other systems are also capable of carrying out the reset.

OBD11 has some functions under Basic Settings for Telematics unit, only two of them look like they might be related to this reset action:

"Resetting of all adaptation values" (sounds a little scary)

"Resetting the history of the emergency call battery"
(Maybe this is the equivalent of the ODIS function?)

Yes, I would imagine that the second option would do the trick.
