As above. Top tip for anyone having a bash. Remove the alternator. The ten minutes it takes make the job much more pleasant.

After replacing everything, new thermostat in, new o ring. I re bolted the housing back on. Only to find the asshole drips. It’s tight. Should I replace it? Or have I done something wrong

Is it plastic?
Quite a common problem on VAG cars.
Housings either warp or the plastic goes brittle and starts to break up causing leaks.

Ya it’s plastic and looking at it I think it’s original

Also should I put the o ring in the hole between the housing and thermostat or should I fit it to the housing first?

Did you use any silicone on the o ring ?
I always put a small amount on gaskets or o rings plus always make sure the surfaces are super clean before rebuilding

I will add a dab of silicone when I take it apart again haha. I always clean up before I re assemble
